Most Newsweek staffers agree: The word "terrorist" should be reserved to foreigner attackers only
Edited on Mon Feb-22-10 06:09 PM by ohiodemocratic
I found this article disturbing and hard to believe:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/233949/page/1

Newsweek actually had a debate among its workers regarding whether or not an American who kills people deliberately is a terrorist vs. a foreigner having committed a similar action.

Glenn Greenwald tweets: "Anyone who doubts that the media "definition" of "Terrorism" includes: "Muslim -- not American" - should read this." (referring to the Newsweek article)

Here's just one comment by Kathy Jones, the person whose title is "managing editor of multimedia" in Newsweek:

Here is my handy guide:
Lone wolfish American attacker who sees gov't as threat to personal freedom: bomber, tax protester, survivalist, separatist

Group of Americans bombing/kidnapping to protest U.S. policies on war/poverty/personal freedom/ - radical left-wing movement, right-wing separatists

All foreign groups or foreign individuals bombing/shooting to protest American gov't: terrorists

Then, a bunch of reporters go on to agree with Jones.

1. Good. So the Spanish ETA aren't terrorists? Neither the IRA?
Tell that to a Spaniard's face.

2. Plenty of people here who agree with that, too.
I guess it's only terrorism if the brown people do it.

4. That is pure bullshit
Terror is terror regardless of who is committing it and the act of terror is terrorism.

BULLSHIT!

12. All too believable. Along with routinely down-playing lefty gatherings and pumping up Reich-Wing...
...gatherings.

7. In other words, 'terrorist' has been annointed as a RW code word to use by Newsweek.

8. With only one exception
And that's "eco-terrorists." Then, even white people can be labeled terrorist if they place the environment equal to or above corporate profits. 'Cause that's just classic terroristical thinking.

10. No. What then would Richard Bruce Cheney be, if not a terrorist?
