Major Northeast Snowstorm on Its Way Updated: 6 minutes ago
(Feb. 23) -- The Middle Atlantic region has stolen most of the weather headlines this winter, but that's all about to change. The Northeast is going to be hit by a prolonged, major snowstorm in the coming days. Snowfall amounts might be measured in feet, and the combination of snow and wind will create an all-out blizzard at the storm's peak.

The details of the storm cannot be pinpointed yet, but combination of snow and wind will likely create blizzard conditions in the Catskills and Adirondacks of upstate New York, Vermont, northern New Hampshire, and northern Maine from later Thursday into Friday. Road and airport closures are likely, and the strong wind may bring down power lines and tree limbs. The intense combination of snow and wind might extend to areas close to the coast, including Boston, New York City, and perhaps Philadelphia.

While this will be the most likely time for the storm to reach blizzard status, it will only be part of what will be a long week of intense, wintry weather for nearly all of New England, New York state, and even eastern Pennsylvania.

1. Late February is prime time for a big snowstorm there.
Annoying to deal with, but not unexpected.

2. I keep thinking of 1969, a mostly dry, warm winter
until everything fell at once in March. It was nasty.

Yeah, it does that in New England. The blizzard of 1978 was in February.

8. Yep.
Blizzard of '78 was early February. I was in ME then and we didn't get much snow but there were shortages of fresh fruits and vegetables at the supermarkets because the trucks couldn't drive out of Chelsea, and no one could get out of the state by air unless they were headed to Canada since all planes connected through Boston. Drivers had to go by way of NH and VT on state routes rather than interstates.

I've been snowbound in Boston in mid-March, and once on April 1 but that's unusual. Snow in February, par for the course.

12. I was on Cape Cod for that one
and we got thirty inches of the damned stuff. I got up early to dig out and got to work only a half hour late, only to find out the governor had called for a total travel ban in the eastern half of the state. Oh well.

What I remember was that we were in bright sunshine and surrounded by black cliffs of clouds on all sides. That storm really was a frozen hurricane, eye and all.

That was a wild and woolly few days.

26. I was schedule to fly out of Logan the day of that storm.
Took 3 or 4 days to get a flight and even then it was a stroke of luck -- a very tired but very competent counter agent found us a circuitous routing on the day Logan opened.

19. I was in Boston for that one
I had to walk in the middle of the street (no traffic, couldn't find the sidewalks) and tripped over something. It was the top of a VW.

;-)

But for the record, I am sick of all the snow this winter -- And I live in TEXAS!

6. I feel sorry for parts of Texas
Storms this year have rolled over us pretty rapidly but when they hit Texas, they seem to stall.

11. That doesn't mean that normal weather isn't occurring in some areas.
For example, it's been gray and rainy for most of the last month in the SF Bay area. That's not normal for some winters, but it's normal for El Nino and La Nina years, and this is an El Nino year.

Northern New England has had a relatively tame winter this year, but natives know that it's far from over and a big snow storm is something that they anticipate. Snow in the extreme south and massive snowstorms in the Mid-Atlantic area -- that's abnormal.

14. Here in Minnesota, it has been a normal winter.
We have a snow amount that is almost exactly average. We've had a couple of spells of below zero temperatures. It is an unremarkable winter here.

27. Pretty unremarkable in Northern Michigan, too
We have a great deal of snow on the ground, but that's normal. All in all it has been a quiet winter, we get snow almost daily, but that's normal lake-effect snow and we don't think twice about it.

Last winter was totally different. It snowed and snowed and snowed and snowed some more. Mostly lake-effect snow. The snow was still melting in mid-May!

23. It has been a pretty mild winter here in
NW Ohio. Only one below zero cold spell around Jan. 1. Hardly any snow until last week, then we got about a foot or so. It snowed a bit yesterday, but the big storm they were predicting fizzled. It's warmish, in the upper 30s today. This is winter weather I can get behind.

31. I also live in NW ohio, just got back from Lima. All the roads south of
Rt 30 are heavily brined. I had to look at the radar when I got home to see what was going on. This little one coming in from the west, will probably miss us too.

3. Thats for people in interior New England ...
it's going to be mostly mixed and rain on the coast (where I live). I have no problem with rain for a few days - especially if it'll get rid of the snow that's here now, and that's not that much.

7. Wow.
Get prepared soon, don't wait til the last minute.

Don't panic, but don't put it off too long iether.

Where I live, we have to be prepared to lose power for up to 4-7 days - large grid with small number of people to maintain it.

When we get predictions like this one, we stock up on gas for the gennie - 25 gallons of gas, and take inventory in the pantry and freezer.

Better to have it and not need it, than the reverse.

13. Phew I'm out of that muck!
I just saw the tittle and went... oh oh... with parents in Cleveland. Yes kiddies, good to know your geography.

(And yes this southern Californian is doing the damn driving, so far it has been pretty good... as in no snow, mostly. Oh and my frame of reference the first day for the slippery was... wet, flowy mud. That is what this reminded me of... thank the gods for that Emergency Vehicle Operator course... at least I got the damn THEORY)

there is only an inch or two of snow left in my backyard........

I'm willing to take one good blizzard for the team.

Gotta go rent some movies and make sure I have gas for the snowblower.

And Thursday into Friday we're expecting more heavy rain/snow, although where I live it'll probably be an all snow event.

The generator is all ready...the freezer is full

Just another New England late February storm.

Although I don't expect it'll be as bad as the ones that hit the DC area. But you never can tell.

PS...the dogs are loving it. :7

30. boston will get mainly rain
that's been the weather trend this winter. Those up north will get hit. We down here will get rain, sleet and a little snow. I don't expect much, but then again, like a child, I am trying not to get my hopes up high, because yes, I love snow storms.
