Detroit tops airport satisfaction study
Detroit tops airport satisfaction study

...A new report shows which North American airports seem to make the experience painless and which can add to the frustration.

The study, conducted by J.D. Power and Associates, surveyed more than 12,000 people who took a round-trip flight between January and December 2009.

They were asked to grade their departing and arriving airports on categories like accessibility, the check-in experience, the security process, the level of comfort in the terminal, the food choices offered and baggage claim.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Michigan received the best grades among large airports -- those servicing 30 million or more passengers per year -- while some of the country's best known airports came in at the bottom...

1. DETROIT?!
Oh my. I believe I'll end my comments with puh-leeze.

2. When's the last time you flew through?

3. 2008, friend's wedding
Stayed at a nearby motel, which I have tried in vain to erase from my memory ever since. Maybe they got a lot better in a year, but it would have had to be a LOT better.

It was a nice wedding, though.

4. In 2008 it would have depended if you flew Northwest or not.
I'm guessing you didn't and got stuck with the old terminal before the overhaul. I won't lie, that terminal was freaking hideous.

6. Maybe it was the old terminal
As I recall, the griminess of the fixtures was exceeded only by the griminess of my fellow travelers. Who knows? We may go through Detroit on the way to Pittsburgh in June, and I can adjust my opinion.

5. Years ago when I lived there, I considered it the worst airport in the country.
I guess it has improved a bit.

7. It really has.
It used to be so run-down and depressing that it could suck the joy out of vacations.

8. DETROIT? Yep, I expected that knee jerk reaction, it's typical whenever Detroit is mentioned
But for those of you who have not flown through Detroit recently, the McNamara and North terminals are both wonderful; clean and inviting with lots of options for shopping and eating.

Security lines move well too.

The two airports I hate worse than anything are O'Hare; I vowed never to set foot in that place again after a twelve hour delay connecting from Denver in 2000 and haven't -- and Miami. You want to talk about dingy and depressing. Ugh.

9. I've never had any problems going through Metro
Later on, when I found out that other Airports weren't as easy to go through as Metro, I felt luck to have it

10. It is the easiest one to find your way around.
That counts for a lot.
