Can anyone help me out here?
All of a sudden the vast majority of "Al Gore must run" threads have disappeared and instead we have a boatload of "support Gravel" threads.

What happened to the Al Gore lovefest in GD?? Did I miss something?? It's like one day not a peep about Gravel, like he really is a potted plant, then the next day POW it's Graveltime.

13. Have you ever drove up
the "Road to the Sun" at Glacier National Park, Montana in late May? Oh yea, it happens there too.... :scared: ...People have been know to wet themselves when the weather turns from sunny and calm to a snowy blizzard with lightening in a 15 minute span.

4. I skip the pro-Gravel posts. That man clearly does NOT have the
temperament to be president. He appears to be suffering from some mild dementia.

Oh, and there's the little matter of his not standing a chance in hell of ever being elected. It's just a waste of time.

5. I thought I noticed some dementia, too.
He was born in 1930 and I think of him more as a grumpy, old man!

7. Yep. And I don't intend to be mean or make a joke about that.
He really does come across like some people I've been around in the early stages of Alzheimer's. (Also kind of like Zell Miller.)

12. Both my parents had Alzheimer's and he reminds me a bit of my Dad.
Do you know what the story is on him? I'd never heard of him until the debates. From his web site, he was a senator from 1969 to 1981, then nothing.

I really like him to tell you truth.
He's like that crazy uncle everyone has that doesn't know any better than to tell the baldfaced truth without any sugarcoating. Cracks everyone up so much that they actually let him say whatever he wants.

He makes Dennis look "normal" and quite frankly, anything that helps Kucinich get a progressive domestic message out into the airwaves is a plus IMHO. Last time we had Sharpton and Kucinich competing as the crazy uncles of the campaign so IMHO it's nice to have Gravel there for that purpose instead ((every campaign needs one IMHO))

He's not afraid to call "bullshit" and then explain what the BS is. He's got that good old fasjioned plain speaking venue.

I kind of look forward to the, "Oh come on, that is ridiculous and you know it!" stuff that comes out...:D

He doesn't have a chance in winning, but he'll be more than happy to slap a few R's around in the process...that alone should make for some great press...

To McCain, something like: "You're whacked, you can't even put a thought together, much less a sentence! I thought I was a potted plant till you popped up."

6. Gravel is a great fellow, and has not been in the public eye lately.
Mike Gravel has been Mike Gravel for a long time, and we know him on the left. It's great to see him join the fray and get some play because his message has always been genuinely good and patriotic and his style a kind of "take no prisoners" forthrightness that puts most graduates of the D.C. cauldron to shame.

President Gore is, frankly, the reason for being of this site; he is NEVER out of sight or mind, everyone knows it including Al and Tipper. And we know he will be prominent in threads here for about the next 12 years minimum.

Also, Rosemary2205, the proper term for the Al Gore thing is "love-in".

10. A bit of rebellion
Against the done deal of the primaries, I think. Gravel is easy to like, also. He is a great Democratic Party hero and refreshingly no bullshit. A viable candidate? No. But I still think very highly of him.

14. Sound change.
"Gore" started to be pronunced with a final 'l': Gorl. Why? Who knows. Must have been a Southern thing.

The 'l' was fully vocalized to "Gorel" by northerners.

It changed via metathesis to "Groel". Two syllables.

Now two vowels in hiatus aren't stable--glottal stops aren't phonemic in English--so a 'w' glide was introduced and quickly phonologized: Growel.

The 'w' shifted to a full bilabial fricative ... "Grovel".

Now, that's just inappropriate, having the man's name be a word so out of keeping with his character, so a vote was taken last Friday morning at 10:45 EDST to alter the first vowel to "Gravel". Consider it taboo avoidance.

16. Rosemary, it is because Gravel REALLY spoke to the heart of us liberals.
Edited on Sat Apr-28-07 09:04 PM by loudsue
And....of course, Gore hasn't announced he is running! (for starters)

Gravel is being painted, intentionally, as some sort of crazy old codger, but the truth is, everything he has said is SO TRUE, and SO HONEST, and is EXACTLY what this country needs to hear A WHOLE LOT MORE of!!!

There are a whole helluva lot of us who are sickened, sick to death, of the media-correct shit that most of our "mainstream" candidates are doing. We want REAL CHANGE in this country, not more of the same.

Kucinich and Gravel are saying what we have been starving for since reagan started fucking the country up 20 years ago...it's been a long, painful dry spell. And we're sick of having shit shoved down our throats about what's "electable" and what's not by the mainstream media and candidates.

We want statesmen who have the courage to say what needs to be said, and Gravel and Kucinich are saying it. These are the two, out of the whole lot of them, that won't give us more corporate america/military industrial complex bullshit if they were elected: they'd move to shut down the bullshit that is killing all of us. And we're glad as hell they're saying what needs to be said.

The tipping point has been reached: some of us are no longer willing to support the status quo.

:kick::kick::kick:

17. The first debate
introduced him as a firebrand determined to hold the establishment pols feet to the fire. He isn't going to be elected but I sent him money after the debate because I want him in each and every debate continuing to do what he clearly does best.

When Gore comes in, I won't have spare time or money for Gravel but neither will I need him around if Gore stays the firebrand that he has become in the last few years.
