Does Anyone Know Why Dan Abrams Was Fired From MSNBC?
Edited on Thu Feb-25-10 06:53 PM by romantico
I tried looking it up on Google and got nothing. Did not know there was bad blood between Dan and Keith. Always liked Dan and am sorry to hear he was fired. Is he really bitter and disgruntled like Keith says? If anyone has the lowdown and can fill me in, that would be great!

1. You already know more than I do
Did KO actually say those words - or words to that effect - in front of a camera? This is news to me as well.

5. according to wikipedia, he's chief legal analyst for NBC...
...and has ventured out on a couple of private sidelines. So he's not on MSNBC any more but still works for the parent company.

11. Abrams lost his job as MSNBC general mgr & his MSNBC show was canceled. He remains
a legal analyst for NBC.

3. Because he's bald?
 I really don't know if Abrams has been fired, but found this little bit of hilarity, which I also don't really understand. Like, what was the point?

http://gawker.com/5480353/keith-olbermann-wants-you-to-remember-dan-abrams-is-bald

Assailing PR man/humble website proprietor Dan Abrams, a known bald man with a hair-system of some kind, on last night's Countdown, thick-maned pirate Olbermann employed some very subtle wordplay. He used coded language and punnery to mock Abrams' shameful chromedomedness.

To call the details of the spat irrelevant would be giving them too much credit, so don't you worry your pretty, well-coiffed head about that. Instead, just listen to all of Keith's deft bald jokes. Which were, really, the core strengths of his entire rebuttal. A tipster lays them out:

And in his attempt to implant his bitterness toward this place, to plug or weave it into his website, he has wigged out. He would like us to sweep his failure under the rug as if it were a bald-faced lie, or there will be hell to pay.

Cruel, masterful wordsmithery, Olbermann! Abrams is notoriously sensitive about his science hair — during his days at MSNBC, we hear the makeup people were not allowed to touch it — so that can't have felt good. Ten points for Olbermann house! Five points to Abrams because we feel bad. Won't someone be nice and go read Mediaite to make him feel better? Or, if you're really nice, Geekosystem.

4. Yes
Dan wears fake hair and at times on his show it looked terrible.Keith did not mention him by name but Huffpost has an article where they clearly that is who he is talking about.

6. Man, that was cold
I've been Googling Abrams hair images since I read that story. The copy that Olbermann read was definitely "rooted" in something - could be Abrams is just OCD about his brain-fur. Regardless, funny stuff! :)

10. I know, I caught that! And especially at the end, when he said
"hell to pay" and deliberately made it sound like he was saying "hell toupee"!

12. Abrams is a cancer survivor
And has spoken openly about his battle with testicular cancer, so I'll cut him some slack with the hair issue. I think KO should be a bit more sensitive regarding his baldness.

to go after someone's hair "issues" that's something that just happens. :yoiks:

23. Ouch! I hadn't noticed anything dubious about his hair before.
I'd say Abrams has done a good job of faking it.

but I always thought it was weird that nobody ever mentions that he's Elliott Abrams' cousin.

Slight conflict of interest there. Almost as bad as Campbell Brown, or Andrea Mitchell, or Mika Brzezinski, or...

Well, yeah.

13. There may be some bad feeling toward Abrams from his time as MSNBC general mgr. Reportedly,
he made David Shuster apologize on air to Repub Rep Marsha Blackburn. Abrams made Shuster say that he was factually wrong in his comments, except it turned out Shuster was factually correct.

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowldc/television/dan_abrams_and_shusters_apology_67962.asp

What other things may had led to Abrams leaving as GM, who knows. I recall at the time MSNBC portrayed it as a voluntary thing and Abrams went back into the prime time line up with his own show, which was eventually canceled. Previously there were rumors that KO was, shall we say, not a fan of Abrams.

14. On last night's show, Keith talked about a fired NBC correspondent
I thought he was talking about Dana Milbank. KO said something about "bitterness" over getting fired. I may have inferred too much.

22. No, he specifically called out Mediaite, which is a web site started by Dan Abrams.
The reference is to Dan Abrams, former anchor and General Manager of MSNBC. Olbermann video here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677//vp/35572476#35572476

That's a big no-no at MSNBC.
