Violent French husbands 'may be tagged'
Source: BBC

Men seen as likely to be violent towards their wives could be forced to wear an electronic tag under a law being debated by the French parliament.

The tag would have to be worn by men who have received a court order to stay away from their partner.

The proposal is part of a draft law on conjugal violence. It has cross-party support and is expected to pass easily.

According to the government, around 160 women in France are murdered by their husbands or partners every year.

Parliament is also considering outlawing psychological violence in the home, because it is seen by many as a precursor to physical violence.

1. ah, more speech codes
outlawing "psychological violence"

insults, verbal degradation, etc. all fall under that broad umbrella.

of course france is a country where it is a crime to insult a police officer, so this doesn't surprise me

2. I say brand them on the middle of their forheads....
anyone who beats another in a relationship (unless it is consentual..lets face it..some weirdos like it)...should be branded so we can all see what a low life they are.

34. ok so that was extreme....
I am sure it could wait until it was PROVEN....you know...by the dead body of the woman they beat to death or some little clue like that.

How many women are murdered or beaten almost to death and then the guy goes on to do it to another?

In my heart..I really dont want them actually branded...but I really would love to see someway to permanatly identify them.

20. If you were female maybe...
but men were expected to "keep their women in line" and if he had to beat her occasionally, that was seen as ok!?

No, they puritans were truly anything but.

And as a country, we are so, fucking, poorer because of them!

While im a little bothered by the big-brother aspect of this (what next?) some kind of warning label for these assholes is a good idea.

or better yet, why not STOP teaching kids that women are things to be looked at as though they are nothing more than meat?

Europeans (especially the frogs) are very good, romantic talkers to women, but how women are seen and treated (at least behind closed, and not-so-closed) doors here is ... um... yeah >_> It feels like "feminism" here is only so much window dressing sometimes.

mark my words, teach boys, AND girls, to treat each other (and themselves) as equals, and not sex toys, and you'll see this kind of thing disappear, or at least drastically reduce in ONE generation.

Two more things to consider. One the french drink, it's their national past time - a lot.

Two, men only get away with this because no one stops them early on. It's up to BOTH genders to stop and punish this kind of behavior early on, and whenever it's seen.

At least I don't have to worry about my sister's kids - there's no way my brother-in-law would NOT teach both his kids self defense!

36. As a French and Native American woman...
I find the use of the word "frog" to be demeaning racist bullshit.

The French do not drink MORE then other nations or Americans...Just look at the Russians with their vodka or the rednecks with their home brews or a Texan with their whiskey.
It is wrong to brand a whole nation or race etc as bad for the actions of some.
There are good and bad people in every race, religion, political party, sex and Nation.

would be to hook up some sort of tasing device to the tag that went off whenever the stalker got too close to his victim.

5. Why don't we just hook it up to everyone who commits a crime, or why not everybody!
So the cops don't even have to chase you down anymore, they just shock the living crap out of you till you have to turn yourself in.

Murder, theft, jaywalking, domestic violence, all of these are crimes and people who do them once are likely to do them again. Why are we singling out one specific crime as something that takes away your right not to have the government shoving chips into your body like you were a cup of salsa?

18. Yes! EVERYBODY gets one!
Except, OF COURSE, for police officers and their wives and their extended families and the politicians and their families. But the rest of us - we ALL get one. At LEAST one! Perhaps two or more for those who've actually committed a crime or gotten a parking ticket or even (heavens to betsy!) insulted a police officer.

And then, and then, and then . . . we could put them on all of the whales and the kitty-cats and the birdies.

Then again, if you read some of the messages in this thread - only men should have them. ONLY men. And ONLY for the reasons that some WOMEN want men to have them. Hell, let's just bypass all of this bullshit and put the "Insta-Death" collar on all men with a trigger that goes off when they get within 50 feet of their partners. NO chance at all that any woman would run AT the man she hates. Nope, not any chance at all. Perhaps we should give an additional trigger to police officers - WOMEN police officers, of course. Because we all know how men can't be trusted.

By ZEUS, Kurska! You've hit upon something here! I can only pray that you weren't being sarcastic . . .

27. Lol. Hyperbole much?
Stalking seems to be the one crime that assholes can get away with because there just isn't enough manpower on a police force to do anything until they've actually killed their victim. If they had a tasing device on them set off for when they got too close to their victim, they wouldn't need to worry about it unless they were committing their favorite crime. I'm tired of reading about these creeps stalking their exes who complain to the authorities to no avail, and the next thing you know the asshole has killed her. Tase 'em.

Men who are not responsible for their own actions should not be allowed to vote or own property.

Or go out without a leash.

16. This should also apply to violent WOMEN as well . . . RIGHT???
We should also place WOMEN who fall into that same category on the list of those to lose their right to vote or to own anything and to be placed on a leash.

RIGHT???

This wouldn't happen to be a "men only" idea in your mind, would it? Because you didn't include women in your proposal. Simply an oversight on your part, wasn't it?

11. So don't get married
Or make your wife more afraid of you then she ever needs to be.

Laws like this work because people believe in them. The moment the cops start letting people go because they're psychologically connected to "Psycho Hubby" there is going to be some serious issues with this law.

I sure hope the French law is worded so this will apply to women equally.
Both men and women can be abusers.

A court imposed electronic monitor may be in order for some crimes. The question is what level of Due Process is required for the court to impose such a sentence?

25. Eh.
Make physical abuse illegal.

"Psychological abuse" most women can just walk away from.

Or they can opt for what Joyce, a friend, told me she told her husband. At one point he was angry because of something she or one of her daughters did and nearly hit them. That evening at dinner: "If you so much as lay a hand on me or my daugher, just consider this. I prepare all your meals. You'd never know if I put something in your food. It might be in your coffee and breakfast, in your lunch, or even in the dinner in front of you. I know where you sleep for 8 hours every night. You'd never be sure when you went to sleep that you'd ever wake up, whether you fall asleep in front of the tv or in bed, here or at our cabin. I might not do it immediately, but I might. You'd never know when it was coming or what was coming. But it would be coming."

He wasn't a killer, and this upped the ante past where he'd even think of going. And he never so much as spanked his daughter or slapped her hand. He knew that (great?)grand-daughter of English South African settlers made it a point of principle to keep her word.
