Thank You President Obama for Appointing a Scientist With an Understanding of the Tsunami Threat
Edited on Sat Feb-27-10 05:41 PM by berni_mccoy
When Obama took office in Jan. 2009, he appointed Jane Lubchenco as head of NOAA. She is a scientist from the Northwest who gets the impact of climate change and understands the importance of life-impacting threats like earthquakes and tsunamis.

From a Dec. 2009 Posting on NOAA: http://www.oar.noaa.gov/news/archive/2009/noaacoastal.html

“The international community has made tremendous progress since the horrific 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami,” said NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D. “On-going NOAA research, development and deployment of tsunami detection and prediction systems, 24-hour tsunami warning centers, and education — the key to tsunami preparedness — ensure improved protection of lives and property.”

Today, if an earthquake triggered a tsunami threatening Indian Ocean, Pacific Rim and Caribbean nations, the NOAA tsunami warning centers in Alaska and Hawaii could issue warnings within minutes of the earthquake.

Dr. Lubchenco, a competent appointee and a testament to applying science to real-world issues and understanding the science of the real world. I know that they are both very busy today. Obama has already made statements today about the Earthquake and the resulting Tsunamis.

Thank you Dr. Lubchenco for being prepared for today. And thank you President Obama for appointing truly competent people. It made a difference today.

how important his appointee is.

My son lives on Kaua'i and they are about the last Island in the Chain to be affected by this Tsunami from the Earthquake in Chili today..so we'll see what happens.

Here's a local news channel on Oahu with Live Feed. Hawai'i Now.

7. I forgot to leave the link(added)..but, I'd been watching
the live feed with pics from all the Islands and it was really interesting to hear their local analysis.

The airports were congested big time.

So glad they all dodged the bullet..so sorry for the victims of our latest Earthquake:(

Thanks babylonsister:hug:

2. Competence doesn't make for great disaster stories
until incompetence shows how important it is. Think of Clinton's FEMA reaction to the Mississippi River flooding through various states which was far more widespread than the flooding of New Orleans and Bush's FEMA reaction.
