Classification of stereotypical republicans |
|
My daughter has to come up with some categories for a classification example essay. She thought of this topic on her own, but she needs some ideas for classification groupings. It's from a sarcasm standpoint, and I thought maybe there might be something out there that could help her get started with some ideas. I figured that someone on DU might be able to add to what we already have.
She currently has the Teabaggers, Gun nuts, Right to lifers. She needs more than 3 though.
Thankfully, the paper only needs to be 3 pages long.

Birthers - as a sub-set of Teabaggers
Paleo-Republicans - thought to be extinct, believed in fiscal conservatism, robust foreign policy, government that governed least governed best
Rockefeller Republicans - on the verge of extinction, similar to Paleo-Republicans but did believe that a woman was entitled to control her own body and that government had a place in solving some of society's problems

I guess "Morans" wouldn't go over so well, considering it's school-related.

8. I suggest a non-insulting category for people who were born into it |
|
Edited on Mon Mar-01-10 03:47 PM by slackmaster
Like my mom. She quit the GOP in about 1997 because it got taken over by religious loonies, but the reason she became one in the first place was that she was born in a place where she was immersed in a different kind of GOP than exists today.
She was born in a small town in Iowa. The following were all life-long Republicans:
Both her parents, Most of her schoolmates and teachers, Most of her neighbors, Most of the people in the church she attended, The families of most of her fellow Camp Fire Girls, etc.
None of the negative stereotypes brought up in the OP or any of the other responses apply to her.
She's pro-choice, supports womens' rights, is probably neutral on same-sex marriage, and respects the right to privacy. LibertyLover came close with "Paleo-Republicans", but I'd add the nuance that party choice often reflects the attitudes of people around us.

My definition...
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 08:31 PM by Javaman
moron: someone who does something wrong but doesn't know it.
idiot: someone who does something wrong but does it anyway.
jerk: someone who does something wrong, knows it's wrong but does it anyway.
fucking jerk: someone who does something wrong, knows it's wrong, does it anyway and enjoys it.
asshole: someone who purposely does something wrong, knows it's wrong, does it anyway, but not only enjoys it, but finds creative ways to make it worse.
fucking asshole: same as above but gets paid for it.
All of the above can be applied to repukes, one way or another.

13. The rare but still not extinct - Conservative |
|
Yes, actual Conservatives do exist and are often Republican. By this I mean those fitting the definition (as per New Oxford American Dictionary): "(n) a person who is averse to change and holds to traditional values and attitudes, typically in relation to politics."
Note that "averse to change" does not mean opposing absolutely everything for political reasons, which is part of the definition for "Republican Congressperson".
There are still true conservatives out there but I imagine most if not all try to hide the fact that they are registered Republicans out of fear of being associated with the wingnuts (another good category) and other lunatics that make up the vast majority of the GOP these days.
