Six puppets, one flower child, and an angry old bastard who really should be your President.

by Jay Esbe
April 28, 2007

The debates last (Thurs.) night were like watching paint dry but for the presence of Mike Gravel, former Senator from Alaska. Of course he doesn’t stand a snow-ball’s chance in hell of becoming the next President, but he should; anyone who’s endured the last years not locked in a dungeon incommunicado who’s not as indignant, outraged, fed-up, and outright angry as Gravel is, is actually part of our problem.

It’s been said by more than one pundit, that Gravel is the “Zell Miller of the left”. I can’t really say I disagree with that observation, but it is missing a crucial qualifier: Zell Miller was wrong about virtually everything, and Mike Gravel is absolutely right about virtually everything. That’s kind of important. At least to me.

Gravel represents everything good in an American perspective post-9/11 Bush crime spree; he’s not crying –like Dick Durbin actually did when he apologized for rightly comparing the GOP to Brown Shirts-. He’s probably barely self-aware, so great is his passion for our reality long ago lost to a malignant media corporatocracy and those who’ve been successfully hypnotized en-mass by it.

I was hoping Barack Obama would impress me. I like the idea of the first black President. I like the idea because I like the idea of a bunch of racist, war-mongering redneck knuckle-draggers from red states, being as angry and afraid of their own government as we have been for the last 6 years. But Barak, contrary to Chris Matthew’s obvious attempt to promote his candidacy out of Hillary contempt, didn’t cut it in my book. He came off as “thinking out loud” and searching for answers he should have had. I feel your pain Chris Matthews; Hillary needs to be stopped. She is the one sure fire chance for putting a Republican back in the White House. I hate her too. But is there REALLY going to be a dime’s worth of difference between any of the so-called “top tier” candidates if elected? I don’t think so...

10. did you hear Kucinich on Bill Maher Friday nite??
he believes in "peace" and working with other nations, what an idea huh? sounds good to me better than having continuous war, and death and destruction by a psychotic regime we have now.

11. no, don't get HBO, but
I think quite a few Dems want peace and working with other nations. They just don't use the same words.

5. Do a little digging about Gravel before you let his fire & brimstone
speaking style influence you. This is just the first debate. Lots more to see from all these folks. One debate does not
a candidate make. Keep an open mind.

7. Keep an open mind???

I hope you'll pop in on every single post in which a DUer shakes their cyber-head sadly and says that they really like ___________'s platform best, but can't support him because he's "unelectable." Gravel or Kucinich would both fit that bill.

Please don't forget to remind all those "can't vote for someone tptb have determined to be unelectable" voters to keep an open mind about electability.

6. Can't quite handle being spoon fed by a bulldozer!
Mr gavals style is an issue...it over shadows being right or wrong! His style is exactly what Americans should be tired of from any politican. Force is not a way to govern.

The appearant honesty of Edwards does appeal...and no I don't care if he gets 400 dollar haircuts...I do care if he writes them off as a business expense. But if its his personal money (which he does have a bit of) who cares!

And I must admit that Mr. Bidden appeals for his ability to answer a yes or no question with a yes or no.

The rest of the story will be told in weeks to come...but somebody has to say something useful...after that it just becomes part of the platform.

9. Agree
when you have nothing to lose like Kucinich and Gravel--- you can be as bellicose as you want. You'll find that many here on DU forget there is a middle in this country and that they're all not like us....

Oh and welcome to DU.
