UK airline pilots spot giant UFO'Mile wide' mystery object hovers off Channel Islands
http://flysouth.co.za/news/2007-04-27/021.shtml

Two experienced airline pilots at the controls of separate flights have reported seeing a mystery object "up to a mile wide" hovering off the coast of Alderney on Monday, This is Guernsey reports.

Captain Ray Bowyer, 50, of local airline Aurigny, spotted a "bright-yellow light" 10 miles west of Alderney at about 3pm during a flight from Southampton while his aircraft was 30 miles from the island at 4,000ft.

He recounted: "It was a very sharp, thin yellow object with a green area. It was 2,000ft up and stationary. I thought it was about 10 miles away, although I later realised it was approximately 40 miles from us. At first, I thought it was the size of a 737.

"But it must have been much bigger because of how far away it was. It could have been as much as a mile wide."

Continuing his approach to Guernsey, Bowyer spied a "second identical object further to the west". He said: "It was exactly the same but looked smaller because it was further away. It was closer to Guernsey. I can't explain it. At first, I thought it might have been a reflection from a vinery in Guernsey, but that would have disappeared quickly. This was clearly visual for about nine minutes.

"As I got closer to it, it became clear to me that it was tangible. I was in two minds about going towards it to have a closer look but decided against it because of the size of it. I had to think of the safety of the passengers first. I'm certainly not saying that it was something of another world. All I'm saying is that I have never seen anything like it before in all my years of flying."

Bowyer described his sightings to ATC. Paul Kelly, 31, the duty air traffic controller at the time, said "nothing had appeared on his radar", but that he'd received a "similar report" from a Blue Islands pilot en route to Jersey at the same time. Kelly explained that as the pilot went past Sark he "described an object behind him to his left".

He continued: "The description was very similar to Captain Bowyer's and they described it as being in exactly the same place. But they were looking at it from opposite sides."

The Blue Islands pilot explained the UFO was 1,550 feet lower than his aircraft, which was at 3,500ft, so "both pilots placed it at the same altitude", Kelly added.

Regarding the radar blank, Kelly noted: "If the object was stationary, our equipment would not have picked it up because the radar would have screened it out."

53. The radar screens out stationary objects. This is so they can be
aware of other craft which may collide with them.
If they didn't eliminate stationary, the screen
would be too busy at some critical times.

particularly that there were 2 different pilots in separate aircraft independently describing the same object, the descriptions independently place it in the same location, and at the same time.

4. Strange coincidence?
"Being a quiet and secluded island, Alderney has attracted a number of famous residents, including author ... T. H. White (The Once and Future King)..."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alderney

My first thought on reading about this UFO was that Merlin was coming back through the "Radiant Door" (Taliesin). Then I realized they were talking about the islands between England and France, not England/Wales and Ireland (where the "Radiant Door" is supposedly located). So what's special about Alderney, I thought? Went to Wikipedia. Read about geography, history, politics, culture, language--just generally interested in this tiny obscure place. Bingo! There was T.H. White, sitting in the quiet of Alderney, contemplating that ancient round magical tale, and recreating it, in such a stunning way, for the modern world. Don't know if he wrote it there. But he was drawn there.

This was also interesting. During Alderney Week (in modern Alderney), one of the main events is:
"The Man-Powered Flight Competition in which entrants build a fantastical flying machine, and then throw themselves off of the Inner Harbour."

present situation if the facts

14. It's difficult for the human mind not to tend in that direction, isn't it?
--that surely someone will rescue us from our own self-inflicted demise?

Or that, the brilliant ones among us, in their enlightened pursuit of scientific knowledge, will stumble across, or "Eureka!" themselves into, some paradigm-shattering discovery, that will turn our energies and busy brains in a positive direction.

I like these hopes and fantasies. They are the dreams that progress is made of. But I think that we should not let them distract us from what we need to do here and now, to restore the progressive power of our democracy: transparent vote counting. This is an essential, Priority #1, strategic matter. Without the power of the vote--the mechanism by which we exercise our sovereignty as a people, and the means by which the best ideas and leaders emerge--we cannot achieve real reform. We cannot change course. We cannot evolve.

If we are to join some existing galactic civilization, or pioneer in its creation, we must restore the MEANS by which collective human intelligence and wisdom are realized. These stupid greedy cave men who are running things in the USA, on behalf of global corporate predator cave men, are trying, in every way they can, to retard human evolution. Vote counting run on "trade secret," proprietary programming code, owned and controlled by rightwing Bushite corporations, is their latest and most lethal tactic. They have fooled almost no one--they are markedly illegitimate rulers. But unless we get practical, and think very strategically about power--how we exercise our power as a people--they will continue trying to bludgeon us back to the Stone Age.

I learned a new word the other day: psephos. It's the original Greek word for the pebbles used to count votes. Nice concrete objects, pebbles. You have to go to a lot of trouble to fiddle the pebble count, and you risk getting caught. But when the votes are no longer tangible--a pebble, a paper ballot--and are turned into substanceless electrons, inside "black box" machines whose inner secrets are obscured by corrupt laws giving the "right" to that code to private partisan business corporations, the potential for WRONG vote counts, and uncorrectable evil-doing, is greatly escalated. And that's where we are, in the midst of a huge escalation of evil-doing that is totally mystifying to many people. How...HOW...could these numbskulls and criminals be in charge of the US government?!

Frustrated here, our minds reach to the stars, and to ancient legends, in the hope that some new liberating thing might occur that will swiftly solve the blockade of human creative energy that the great majority of us are chafing under.

But it may be that the humble pebble (psephos) is the key, not some grand discovery or event. Count every vote, and we'll see what this great democracy can do.

8. Permit me some skeptical questions
Why would Brits speak in terms of feet and miles rather than meters and kilometers? What is the credibility of this news source? Has any other source reported the story? Isn't it weird for pilots to be quoted, but not airline spokespersons? This doesn't smell right to me.

11. The British don't use meters and kilometers
when referring to distances. Distances are always given in miles on UK roads and presumably that extends to the air.

It's a bit of a mish-mash here, really. Products in supermarkets are labelled with both metric and imperial measures, temperatures are given in Celsius with the Fahrenheit thrown in as an afterthought and schoolchildren are taught the metric system. My sons know what a mile is, but don't know what the actual distance amounts to.

If you go to a pub in Britain you get your beer by the imperial (20 oz.) pint (as opposed to a 16-oz. American pint - crucial info for converting recipes from one country to the other!). Wine measures, however, are metric.

My children are hopeless at anything but the metric system, but my mother-in-law can't begin to comprehend it. I'm comfortable with all of it.

And even that's a little bit inconsistent...we measure airspeed (and groundspeed) in knots normally but weather observations are reported in statute miles. :eyes:

15. We can't detect dark matter either -- UFO could be radar-invisible
MOst of the mass of any galaxy is made up of "dark"matter -- which we can't detect by any known means. We know it's there only because of the gravitational pull it exerts. So it's not beyond the realm of possibility that a UFO would be invisible to radar.

"UFOs sighted off coast - watch report

"Watch report

"Pilots and aircraft passengers have confirmed sightings of two large Unidentified Flying Objects off the coast of Guernsey.

"The mysterious shapes were spotted earlier in the week and are described as long objects that measured up to a mile wide.

"Radar screens picked up some activity in the area and pilot witnesses are now preparing reports for the relevant authorities. Aurigny Pilot Ray Bowyer (pictured) is a professional pilot who has been flying for 20 years. He said: 'In my years of experience I've never seen anything like this and frankly I'd be perfectly happy not to ever again. It's a pretty chilling thing and from my first sighting of it - it appeared to be fairly small but it must have been fairly huge.' To see Mr Bowyer's diagram of the object, click to watch the full report, above."

or possibly inhabitable, that really opens up the question of aliens visiting us. 20 odd light years is not that far in the greater scheme of things. Granted, a red dwarf may not be a great place to set up shop, but life has shown itself highly adaptable on Earth, why not on other planets?

maybe not. I'm sure even veteran pilots haven't eye-witnessed every meteorological formation possible.

The world is a mysterious and wondrous enough place without requiring alien spaceships.

Seriously, alien ships are NOT just as likely as a unique cloud formation.

..There is a spot in the water, its distinct and obvious. If your looking at the UFO, just look to the left and down of it. Its a "white" spherical shape on the water.

Another odd moment. I Was watching a Democracy Now episode on I-Tunes and there was an Iraqi talking, just to his right and just slightly higher then the surrounding buildings there was the "think" in the sky just hovering there. It wasnt a helicopter or a street light or birds. It was like the UFO in the famous painting of the virgin mary, the UFO over her sholder.

40. We are currently under a UFO flap since mid 2006
We had important sightings like the O'hare airport, the multiple dancing UFO fleet in Archway, center of London (Jan 2007), Phoenix lights II (although this time may have been the military playing with flares to discredit the original incident), and now this one which will become one of the most important UFO sightings ever once more witnesses come forward. Everything points to a hot summer of UFO activity.

47. Guernsey is a UK crown possession, and I have to say...
it's strikingly beautiful, just tons of rolling green hills, or at least that's what I see from Google Earth. :-)
