TIME TO STOP VIRGINIA TECH STORIES: students reconsider attending
If someone wants to do a story on gun control, mental illness, or how immigrants assimilate, great.

But this is some lazy-ass and STUPID reporting.

The chances of something like this happening at the same school again are pretty slim, and worse, running this story will plant unnecessary doubts in the mind of some dim bulb parents.

An editor somewhere needs to start reassigning reporters before we get the "How Virgina Tech affects pets" story.

Prospective Hokies weigh enrollment

By ZINIE CHEN SAMPSON, Associated Press Writer Sun Apr 29, 2:17 PM ET

RICHMOND, Va. - Tommy Esson and his father had already visited Virginia Tech last summer, and on a return visit he was looking forward to showing his mom around the university where he planned to spend the next four years.

Instead, the family found themselves locked down with a group of students and employees on the Blacksburg campus during the April 16 shootings in which a gunman killed 32 people and wounded 25 before killing himself.

Even as the extent of the massacre became apparent to those watching television during the lockdown in a McComas Hall exercise room, several students reassured the Essons and encouraged Tommy to enroll this fall.

"They were very supportive of me and were very intent on making sure I understood that 'It's not like this,' and anybody who saw me was telling me that it shouldn't let that detract from my view of campus," Esson said in a telephone interview.

1. The irony is, at least here at DU, your post keeps the VT theads going.
Just when they were fading away.

2. The only good thing that came out of this -

Is that the nation got to see just how tight knit the Hokie Family really is. That is part of why many alumni like myself were so effected by the shootings, its like losing family. Add to that that I knew one of the wounded, and one of the killed, and it hurt.

I stayed off DU when the gun control / mental illness / Iraq comparison threads were flying all about. It was just extremely distasteful to witness so many use this tragedy for political gain. It was quite disgusting.

4. peopel see a problem and they want to fix it. When you are personally involved
it probably looks a lot different.

I thought this particular story was kind of kicking the school when they are down, like wondering aloud whether it was safe to go to Colorado after Columbine.

I've known people who went to Virginia Tech, so it's not entirely abstract to me. I'm sorry for your loss.
