Accused David Letterman blackmailer Robert Halderman will plead guilty to $2M revenge plot

Source: NY Daily News

An Emmy-winning CBS News producer will plead guilty Tuesday to shaking down David Letterman for $2 million as payback for the host's torrid affair with his live-in girlfriend, sources said.

In exchange for the plea, Robert Halderman will receive a six-month jail sentence, the sources said. He will also serve 4 1/2 years probation and do 1,000 hours of community service.

He was due before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon on Tuesday afternoon.

The plea came five months after Halderman, 51, threatened to expose Letterman's affairs with a number of female staffers on his "Late Show" - including the blackmailer's ex-girlfriend.

1. I wish Letterman could wage a privacy suit on Halderman.
Letterman would never have revealed such personal information about himself on television if it weren't for this jackass. This jackass plead guilty because he already got what he wanted - embarrassing and defaming Letterman and pushing him into a $300 million divorce and custody battle with Regina Lasko.

Yes, I acknowledge Letterman's womanizing behavior, but that was private information best left between Letterman, his wife, and the women he's slept with over the years.

9. I'm not sure.

I did notice that he hasn't been wearing a wedding ring on the air... not that I ever noticed he was wearing one before. I haven't seen any additional news on this, so I'm not sure whether the divorce is still in development.

6. Why couldn't he?
Now that the Criminal case is over, thereis no reason David could not file a Civil suit, and probably will, because six months is just not that big of a deal. Six months risk for a possible two million dollars seems almost worth the risk. Many would not do what Letterman did and air it on his show. Many would just pay the blackmail..

10. The problem is Letterman decided to reveal the information himself.
Which would complicate an embarrassing facts case, which I think would be the kind of privacy tort under question here.

I'm not a lawyer, however, so I don't know for sure.

4. What torrid affair? He wasn't married at the time
And the fact that he ended up with the same woman--well, that's the stuff that late-night show skectches are made of?

7. Sad isn't it that the media craves sensationalism? Or attempts to influence how one is viewed?

5. "Torrid love affair"? Is this what passes for journalism today?
