Pennsylvania Republicans Warm to Single Payer

The Pennsylvania Senate is controlled by Republicans.

There are fifty seats in the Senate.

Thirty of the Senators are Republican.

And twenty are Democrat.

Single payer activists in Pennsylvania are passing around a resolution in the Senate.

The resolution calls for a study of the economic impact of a single payer health care system in Pennsylvania.

So far, 10 out of the 30 Republican Senators have signed onto the resolution.

Eighteen of the 20 Democrats have signed on.

How did single payer activists get ten Senate Republicans to support a study of single payer?

Chuck Pennacchio, executive director of Health Care for All Pennsylvania, says the winning coalition for single payer is going to be “a coalition of conscience Democrats and conscience Republicans.”

1. That's kickass
I posted in a thread about something similar in the Colorado forum, but I want to ask this here as well. I'm not old enough to have any background on this stuff, so I need to find out from some of you grizzled veterans: have there ever been moves toward single-payer like this at the state level in the past? It seems like there's a lot of momentum that way these days. Cal, PA and CO just for starters, evidently.

2. Kill the Federal Bill
I'll take single payer.

They got 10 to sign on...awesome.

The state committee got all candidates to endorse single payer this year.

3. That's my buddy Chuck.
Okay, I don't know him well enough to say he's my buddy, but I do know him, I supported his Senate run, and I think he may just pull this off.

Go Chuck! :applause:

4. Meh. They just voted for a study
That's not the same as voting to implement a single-payer system, but it's a step.

7. The Republican backing is significant
IN CA, single payer has passed three times, but it's been a strictly partisan thing.
