Tenet: Saudis disrupted 1998 plot to assassinate Gore

Saudi Arabia foiled a plot to use anti-tank missiles to assassinate Vice President Gore in 1998 while he was traveling in the region, according to a new book by former CIA Director George Tenet.

The book says Abdel Rahim al-Nashiri, a leading member of al-Qaeda who was later linked to the bombing of the USS Cole, tried to smuggle four Sagger anti-tank guided missiles into the kingdom about a week before the vice president was scheduled to arrive, according to MSNBC.

"Tenet writes that it was reasonable to have expected the Saudis to pass the information along as soon as possible, but they did not," NBC reports. "After low-level discussions failed to produce a sense of urgency among the Saudis, Tenet flew to Riyadh to meet with Prince Naif, the interior minister and the man in charge of the Saudi secret police."

This is one reason why I don't want him running for president. To me it is no longer worth losing your life. It sure would convince me as well how toxic this system really is. I even notice that at his appearances now his arrangements are secret, he has a security detail with him constantly, and at a few appearances he has made to do his presentation he has had security around the stage.

I have wondered if he is getting death threats now because of all of the work he is doing in standing up to the corporations that wish to keep the status quo, and honestly have been concerned for his safety. I remember something he said on David Letterman as well regarding now that he is not a politician they aren't looking to assasinate him or something to that effect and he said it jokingly... I wonder now how serious that really was, and if perhaps he has been threatened in some way either now or in the past. I really would not put it past certain elements looking to stifle the truth.

1. No comments about this?
Is no one else concerned about this?

5. Of course we're concerned about it.
This is an inherent risk of anyone running for the office, particularly if the candidate is a leader of change, because sometimes the entrenched forces representing or profiting from the status quo will stop at nothing to fight change, even if society's current course is ultimately suicidal.

The fundamental question is what can anyone do about it? Stay the course or rally behind a leader of change, because if we don't have leaders of change, nothing will.

2. I didn't believe him then, and frankly
I don't see why I should believe him now.

4. First I've read of this.
I understand your concern, it scares me that assassinations always seem to be our Democratic leaders.

6. I think Al Gore is probably the most dangerous man in the world to
the oil industry and oil producing counties in the ME.

I wonder if the Saudis wish they hadn't stopped it.

He is a dangerous man to many people making billions and trillions off of the oil industry.

I have thought for a long time that there are many, many people who want to shut him up.

No one in the world has been as effective as Al in spreading the word about the Climate Crisis.

Does that all sound overly dramatic? I don't think so. I do worry for him.

7. Well, I'm glad I am not alone in my concern
And no, it doesn't sound overly dramatic, but unfortunately very realistic considering the world we live in.

8. "Foiled attacks" are almost impossible to "prove".
That's why they are often not even mentioned..and probably should not be. If the foiled attack is part of a larger plot, why tip off the "others" by going public on foiling part of it.

Tenet's just covering his ass, by trying to shoe that he was successful at something.

I could say that I prevented many traffic accidents by learning to drive :)
