Without it appearing that one owned the other. It was good fun -- a little mutual roasting, some a laughs, a little seltzer down your pants . . .
No more. Perhaps because -- owing to the consolidation of the media into fewer and fewer hands -- one *does* own the other (or at least answers to the same puppetmasters).
Last year, Stephen Colbert ripped the scab off a wound that had been festering for some time. This year, in reaction to the discomfort he caused, the event's smarmy chumminess was vomitous in the extreme.
The Times has made the right choice. This one needs to fade away, at least until the journos figure out where they left their integrity (but I'm not holding my breath).
