.....My company's health insurance policy work to my benefit......$1500.00 deductible....$300.00 a month for my wife and I...Lab services the pay only 50%....the only way to make it affordable to use is for me to go to the ER where I have a $50.00 copay and they pay the rest.

1. Have a heart attack... |
|
Or get cancer and then let me know how affordable it is.
Insurance is partly to cover the unexpected illness across a pool of people. The whole concept of insurance is not that is pays just for you. Your premium is going towards paying the bills of other sick people.

2. only $1500 deductable? |
|
Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 10:54 AM by 3324SS
Mine is $2700, like you only 50% for labs...once I hit the $2700 they cover 90% then at $5000 100% so if it is major illness it is a pretty good deal but still 5k out of pocket is a allot.
Hey on the upside I have an HSA to go along with it!
Yeah my company bought into the GOP nonsense of the HSA's.
On the upside the Company does support single payer just so they can ditch paying any HC at all.
Which is the most frustrating thing in the entire HC debate, going to Single Payer/Universal HC would save every company one of their biggest expenses, employee HC.
Why every company in America (except for the insurance industry) is not 100% behind single payer/Universal HC makes no sense what so ever.

"Why every company in America (except for the insurance industry) is not 100% behind single payer/Universal HC makes no sense what so ever."
The only answer I can come up with is that we've now become 'insurance slaves.' You dare not rock the boat at work, question the boss or miss too many days or you will lose your job & hence, your health insurance. If someone has a better theory, I'm all ears.

5. I think that's for some of the major coporations.. but even now, they are |
|
really feeling the pinch.. AND really why should our paychecks be attatched to recieving quality health care. If you are sick, no matter what size your paycheck or job status, don't you deserve to receive care?

11. If you pay for your own insurance the deductible is commonly $10,000-12,000. |
|
with a 20% copay after it's met.

14. HSA's aren't nonsense |
|
I've saved thousands of dollars in premiums by placing pre-tax money into an account to cover my deductible. That money hasn't gone to an insurance company.

15. Good for you. The last company I was with had one but the limit I could place in the account |
|
was $2500. And it was the same limit for a single person or a family. Even though my maximum out of pocket for the 2 of us was twice that of an individual, I was unable to contribute more than an individual.
I used it to pay for our co-pays on Rx's but it was still not as good a deal as when the coverage was more comprehensive.

Was mandated by the government. You're only allowed to put X amount into your savings account per year. If you purchase a high deductible policy, it will take you a couple of years to put in enough money to reach that deductible. It sucks because if you have a so-called Cadillac plan, there's no limit on the amount you can pay to a private insurance company in the forum of premiums.

17. Yes, it was mandated by the government |
|
and, at that time, it was a use it or lose it. If you did not spend all that money in the enrollment period you lost it.
These were always part of Bush's 'ownership society' plan to move us towards everyone paying more out of their own pockets. The excise tax in the Senate bill, btw, is part of the same crap.

4. That actually sounds like good insurance. 300 for two people? |

Mine is way more for just one person, and my ER deductible is 150.

If the employer didn't pick up the other half, the cost would be much higher.

9. I'm self employed. I paid over $300.00 a month for myself w/ a $12,000 deductible |
|
a 20% copay after that's met, and no preventative care covered. I've had such a bad year that I finally dropped it. Since I've had the policy I've paid out over $78,000 in premiums, yet I've received only $200.00 worth of coverage. No, it never worked to my benefit; from the perspective of the insurance company it was never intended to.

Did you ever see this post, by chance? http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=7338574&mesg_id=7345572(I ran calculations for you based on the Senate plan in that post, the numbers looked much better than your old coverage.)
