Everybody in the neighborhood called him Buddy, this mornings roadkill

He lost his mom last fall to a dog. As far as we know, he was the only sibling that survived the winter. Buddy was missing most of his tail thanks to a dog this January. We live literally next to Fontenell Forest. Somehow he got the name Buddy. Everybody left out food and watched over him (her?) all winter. This morning as I left for work, I saw Buddy in the middle of the road. This photo was taken on our back patio last month.

4. There is much to admire about possums.
They are fiercely protective of their young.

I have not found them to be pests.

5. That's sad. My wife found one in our garage years ago. She thought it was a rat.

A huge rat. We fed him for about a week, and I guess he couldn't take any more of my wife's cooking :P so he ran off into the night.

We also had 2 peahens - one got shot, and the other run over. We had scumbags for neighbors.

We also had an 'awesome possum' - a sugar glider. Cute, but stinky.

7. I have a raccoon mauled by a coyote that I'm feeding. Her left rear leg
is probably broken, but she limps around on it. She was born in my garage attic a couple of years ago. She can't run or fight with her bad leg, so she's taken to coming out in the day time, when there are fewer coyotes. I leave food and water out for her. She's been this way about 3 months now. Most of the fur on her tail was stripped off, too, but that seems to be growing back.

8. I'm so sorry. I have no death wish for possums, but
I find it really hard to cuddle up to that kind of face. .
