2. Get used to it. Oil is only going to get more expensive as it runs out.
It isn't an unlimited resource, and chances are good several countries overstate their reserves.

4. Hedge funds bid up the spot market prices just over $80
and gas producers use a certain percentage of spot market oil in production as well as contract oil. When the spot market price drops, they sell gas more cheaply. When too much money is chasing commodities futures, as is the case in any economy with too much concentrated wealth, then all hell breaks loose at the pump.

Expect it to happen with food and other commodities, too, as wealth seeks the next bubble to create and exploit.

Couldn't you have thought to make enough oil for at least one million years? No, even a measly thousand years supply was too much to ask! Fucking assholes.

20. I wonder if Texas schools will teach about how crude oil is made within 6,000 years?

Living plankton under a microscope (about 150 x bigger than real life).

Crude oil was made over millions of years from tiny plants and animals, called plankton. The plankton on the left would form oil in about 150 million years time if the sea bed is not disturbed.

The plankton that lived in the Jurassic period made our crude oil.

This was the time of the dinosaurs. It was about 180,000,000 years ago.

Why do you have to drive in the first place?

29. Can you spot this Chevy Tahoe in So. Cal?
The snow level is evident by the pine needle sprig in front of the house. That was actually the level of the DOOR HANDLES on the Tahoe.

We do a lot of biking and walking in the late spring/summer/early fall, but the rest of the time here's what we deal with in MY So. Cal.

The song also claims "it never rains in CALIFORNIA". There are places in California that get more than 44" of rain annualy. My point was that you can't generalize like you did. I'm square in the middle of "Southern California" and this winter I was snowed in for five days.

The picture wasn't photoshopped, I can assure you. Here are a couple more.

43. I still live here
and I drive because as you know we do not have decent public transportation available.

And honestly, I work 6 miles from home. I get to work in 10 minutes. If I had to rely on the bus or the train it would be a 45 minute or longer commute.

I am fortunate enough to live near my city's downtown and all major grocery stores, so I do walk to do my shopping and the like, unless it's raining.

Edited on Tue Mar-16-10 05:34 PM by Lint Head
It is a fact told to me by the owner of quiet a few oil wells. Well pumps are turned off under the cover of 'being repaired' when more profit is needed. We are being raped by the corporation. Oil will run out but not as soon as you think. Everywhere you look geologists have a different opinion on when the supply will be dried up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil
http://economics.about.com/cs/macroeconomics/a/run_out_of_oil.htm
http://www.oilcrisis.com/summary.htm

I'm not saying any of these are right. I'm just relaying what a very rich oil executive told me.
We need a cleaner fuel source than fossil fuels. There is so much mankind does not know about energy.
It wasn't that long ago that mankind discovered radio waves and frequencies. I think there will be a dramatic discovery regarding
clean energy that is available all around us that we just need to discover and harness.

23. The price of gas goes up EVERY SPRING.
In addition the price goes up over time because oil is a non-renewable resource and demand exceeds supply. What mystifies me is that anyone with a basic education would expect it to remain consistent.

Why?

The real question is that WHY does gas now incrementally move up or down, not by 1 or 2 cents a gallon, but 9 or 10 cents.

40. Well past the time to take a leaf out of Europe's book...
In Europe, 60 MPG diesel cars are becoming the norm. The UK is a good example of what's going on there...

From Nov. 08 (I need to do some research for an update): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4510556#4511242">The top ten most fuel efficient cars in the UK do over 60 MPG (the top three over 70 MPG) US = 28 MPG

The top ten most fuel efficient cars in the UK do over 60 MPG (the top three over 70 MPG). I know that's Imperial Gallons but the number one most fuel efficient (non-hybrid) car in Britain does 74.2 MP Imperial Gallon (slightly under 62 MP US Gallon). These are diesel cars, but the http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=algae+biodiesel&search_type=&aq=0sx&oq=alagae+">new generation biofuels would take any worries less informed consumers - who still think diesel is dirty - may have about that...

...the most fuel efficient American made car is the Ford Focus, which ties for the No. 1 spot with the Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac Vibe, which can do 28 miles per US gallon. When you consider the cars mentioned above, the technology is out there to make cars that can do 74 miles per Imperial gallon, something's gotta CHANGE here!
