Public Transportation - It works.
Howdy DUers, my car was rear ended and is in the shop all week. I could have rented a car and be reimbursed by the insurance company - but I decided not to because I bought this great folding bike and wanted to see what it was like commuting with it. In Los Angeles most of the buses are equipped with a bike rack. I just ride up to the corner, wait for the bus, throw it on and I'm off.

The route drops me off less than a quarter mile from where I work and I ride the rest of the way. The first day I rode the nine and a half miles all the way back home - it got a little scary but it wasn't that bad.

This is costing me $2.50 a day and I get my exercise.

Win win if you ask me.

Thanks for listening.

oh, here's my new bike...

3. K & R - THANK YOU!
Public transportation is progressive. It saves money for the individual, pays into a collective base that provides services for even the very poor, gets cars off the road to help mitigate traffic/parking problems, and is more environmentally sustainable than the everyone-drives model.

Win-win-win-win.

4. Hi neighbor - didn't realize you were also in Lost Angeles!
Yeah, the bike racks on buses are great. I haven't used one yet, but I live only 2 miles from work down a major route so I just hop the bus in the AM, and walk home in the evening.

11. I have been involuntarily car-free since I was relieved of my ancient vehicle by
some miscreants last fall, and am enjoying the fact that I don't have to care about gas prices anymore, or come up with $1500 for annual major repairs, or pay the ridiculous insurance rates. It's actually been quite liberating in a way.

Sometimes I miss having a car. Most the time i don't.

12. You can just rent one if need be...
This has certainly been a positive experience, that's for sure. :-)

5. chicago has great public transit. the mayor is a big bike rider.
there is a guy that is the bike czar. buses have bike racks, the trains have bike cars, and the big events in the parks have bike valets.
we have a lot of bike lanes, and you can bike along most of the lake michigan.
it is great. i don't get to use it as much as i like, but the infrastructure is great. i love my mayor. a good democrat.

6. Ummm... how long does this take you?
Transit-dependent myself -- just rode it from San Jose to Oakland (about 50 miles) for a meeting today, in fact, -- but it took two hours each way.

9. I'm a wuss - it took me about an hour. I kept hitting all the red lights too.
It's just as annoying on a bike as it is in a car.

Havn't done that in years.

Time to start again.

14. I went carless for a week while my car was in the shop and used Transit
I'm in the suburbs but a bus at the end of the street connects to the train and in a decent amount of time overall.

15. At age 10 in Hollywood...
used to ride my bike to Santa Monica to go fishing...17 miles each way. Could have spent a nickle and ridden the red cars though if I had wanted to.

Some places can use public transit and it just doesn't work in others.

16. I live in a subrb north of NYC and the public transportation here is awful. That is one thing I miss
about living in the city. I didn't start driving until I was 25 and really didn't need to.

17. It doesn't work too well in AZ.
Our public transportation system sucks.

I drove a tent mate of mine home this morning from jail...cause her sister couldn't pick her up and the bus ride would have taken her 2 hours. I got her home in 20 minutes.

And AZ is cutting more and more routes every month.

Nope, it doesn't work in AZ.
