The Olathe Police Department is investigating racially tinged comments two police officers made during a traffic stop of a black man.

Joshua Sims, 22, of Gardner, was ticketed Feb. 18 at 11:44 p.m. for failing to stop before the intersection of Dennis and Harrison streets. He told local media that in contesting the ticket, he requested a copy of the video recorded in the officers’ patrol car.

A male training officer and a female officer in training are heard discussing the stop after the man was ticketed, according to video posted on Web sites of two local television stations.

“Awful lot of black folks tonight. Typical behavior,” the male officer said.

“You can’t even tell they’re black,” the woman said.

Much of the video is difficult to understand. At one point, the woman officer is heard saying, “I think he’s just a good basketball player.”

The male responded: “Gotcha fooled, huh?”
