New Group: Philosophy
I think we should have a DU group for discussing philosophy (both previously espoused and new and original).

9. Not onboard that theory.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundancy_theory_of_truth

Consider their example sentence, ""Snow is white" is true",

Now, what if the snow turns brown from the ground afterwards, it is still snow, but brown snow now, which necessitates the counter sentence, ""Snow is white" is false", which they say is not needed, and redundant.

18. I read it.
..and i refuted it.

My point was that their example sentence "snow is white" is not always fact, and hence, that example is not proof of their theory (imho). But, this is first that I ever heard of it. Thanks for the info however.

Nothing personal. I love philosophy, especially Comte.

I was commenting on Redundancy Theory of Truth, and not the Prosentential Theory of Truth", which is an elaboration of...

Gotcha. Sorry. Again, thanks for the info. Never heard of that before.

"Yet another version of deflationism is the prosentential theory of truth, first developed by Dorothy Grover, Joseph Camp, and Nuel Belnap as an elaboration of Ramsey's claims."

Edited on Wed May-02-07 12:29 AM by BlooInBloo
... this looks to be a decent rendition of what the prosentential theory actually is.

http://www.iep.utm.edu/t/truthpro.htm

(I don't believe the original paper is freely available, else that'd be the way to go - it's very engagingly written.)

EDIT: BTW - This sub-branch of the thread clearly illustrates the uselessness of a philosophy group in these parts.

37. My Point
I don't think it's what the guy who wants to start a philosophy forum meant. I don't understand why some asshats ALWAYS have to rain on other people's parades. I mean, if you're not interested...DON'T GO THERE. ...but asshattery is so common here.

12. Strange. I wanted to tell you that DU already had a Philosophy
Forum, and it is in my DU list, so I clicked on it and found that it is 'under construction'
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php

I must confess that I rarely went there, but with a forum on astrology (which I love reading occasionaly BTW) DU certainly should have a philosophy forum! It must not have received much traffic. But then again, one of my other favorite forums is Seekers ... which is also not highly frequented but is a jewel IMHO.

39. If a Philosophy Group Falls without anyone hearing it, does it exist?
It did at one time - dates DU groups were added:

...
03/23/05 - Bereavement Group
03/17/05 - Philosophy Group
03/17/05 - Scottish Group
03/10/05 - Baseball Group
...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=206x13

But, like the Scottish Group, it now floats in a "currently offline for maintenance" limbo, neither existing, nor not existing. Not enough people believed in it. There was a cull of rarely updated forums, sometime last year, I think. That does make me wonder if the Philosophy Group should remain as an Ideal Form, rather than a tangible reality.

(I presume that No True Scotsman believed in the Scottish Group either, so it was a fallacy. People must have turned either to the Bereavement Group, or to baseball, for consolation)

21. They should get rid of Religion and Theology and divide it up into two forums:
Philosophy, where the existence of God (amongst many other things) is argued, and Interfaith Sanctuary, where people come to pray together when people die and such. This would be good for all, as people could pray without having to hear arguments of atheists and theists, but the same could battle it out intellectually in the appropriate space.

40. There is a Prayer *Group* already
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=237

and also a Bereavement Group: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=323

You could argue that a forum, open to non-donating members, would give something extra - but the general design of DU is that debate is allowed in the universally accessible forums, while 'sanctuaries' are put as groups.

Edited on Tue May-01-07 11:41 PM by Canuckistanian
Existence is not something which lets itself be thought of from a distance; it must invade you suddenly, master you, weigh heavily on your heart like a great motionless beast - or else there is nothing at all.

29. Would we get to sing this....?
Immanuel Kant was a real piss-ant who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar who could think you under the table...
David Hume could out-consume Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine who was just as sloshed as Schlegel.
There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach 'ya 'bout the raising of the wrist.
Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed.
John Stuart Mill, of his own free will, after half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away, half a crate of whiskey every day!
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
And Hobbes was fond of his Dram.
And Ren頄escartes was a drunken fart:
"I drink, therefore I am."
Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed;
A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed.
