GE is celebrating the Ronald Reagan Centennial....
...with rather nauseating new television ads, that seems to be furthering the agenda of Reagan deification and worship.

Here's an excerpt from an article detailing their "celebration."

As part of a one-year celebration to honor the 100th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's birth, General Electric will run ads honoring the 40th president's legacy -- and will donate $10 million to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library, along with an additional $5 million in scholarships.

This is fitting. In a very real way, General Electric was the vehicle that Reagan rode in his journey from film star to politician. It was a symbiotic relationship, too: Although GE paid Reagan $150,000 in the mid-1950s -- when his movie career had stalled and such a salary was worth more than $1 million in today's dollars -- GE had a reputation for working its people hard. Reagan was no exception. For eight years, he was the host and sometimes star of "General Electric Theater," a Sunday night program that aired on CBS, and a prolific "corporate ambassador" who traveled the country speaking at GE factories. There were a lot of them: Under chief executive Ralph J. Cortiner, a pioneer in decentralization, GE had 139 plants in 38 states, according to Lou Cannon in "Governor Reagan: His Rise to Power" -- and Reagan spoke at most of them, delivering as many as 14 speeches a day.

in response to every single one of those ads. I can go all year if they do.

...riddled w/the crack he, the cia and the dea leaked into the inner city in the late 80's?

as profiled here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Webb#Dark_Alliance

or perhaps we could merely point to the rather mysterious (and suspicious) death of the courageous author that penned the piece, Gary Webb:

http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/december2004/141204webbmurdered.htm

ever heard of a man committing suicide, being found with two gunshot wounds?

:eyes:

of course, we could merely take count of the many homeless people in downtown la to deem just how many were made homeless by reagan's budget cuts, and/or mental health facility closures.

:hi:

We could probably find a destroyd village in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador for every week of the year.

How anyone can celebrate that man is beyond me. It's the biggest scam of the 20th century.

13. Same here.
I was rather shocked by the response when he died (and the rather immediate "hero worship"). I thought it would take a while to reach those levels. I was forced to avoid the media for the two weeks of coverage after he died--it made me sick.

Apparenthly the UCLA Medical Center took on his name, I'm not sure when. :puke:

20th Century Scam is the perfect title for it. You have such a way w/words.

the only good thing about it is that you missed his exultation by the media masses, and worship by those missing his administration and policies. it was truly sickening.

23. I had to avoid TV for several days
because, of course, he was put to rest more like a king than like a former president. And I knew I'd otherwise end up listening to days upon days of praise for him spewing from people. Luckily, I was moving across several states at the time, so TV avoidance was fairly easy.

5. Fuck GE and Fuck Ronnie Raygun.
I'm glad I don't watch TV because I think my head would explode if I saw those ads.

The punk rag Maximum Rock'n'Roll had a special issue in August of 04: "Punk's not dead, Reagan is." It was an absolute classic. It was the most complete collection of stories and lists of just how badly Reagan sucked that I have ever come across. I just checked and it's still available on backorder for the whopping price of $3 ($3.29 in CA) in case anybody is interested. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with MRR except as a reader. Of all the issues I have read over the years, the commemorative Reagan issue stands head and shoulders above the rest. They truly outdid themselves with that one. Then again, they had a lot of material to work with.

Punk rawks! And if you haven't read MRR's commemorative Reagan issue, I highly recommend it. It's a very concise summary of just how badly Reagan sucked. And gawd, did he ever suck!

12. Tuesdays on TCM have been Kurosawa nights all month
This past Tuesday was Kurosawa all day, in fact. I have Seven Sanjuro, Samurai, Yojimbo, Roshomon, and Stray Dogs on my DVR. This coming Tuesday will be Ran, Dersu Uzala, and Kagemusha. I have to watch some Kurosawa before I have to delete them. Too many good films!

This is the opposite of Ronny Reagan: too many bad policies (and terrible films).

...how did i miss this? :( i'm bummed, i've missed so many. thanks so much for letting me know, hopefully i can catch some before the end of the celebration (of Kurosawa) thank you, thank you, thank you!!

oh gawd--the policies and the films of raygun.
at least the schlocky films could be ignored, (w/exception of the only one w/a decent actress in it). his policies adversely and negatively affected so many people. :scared:

oddly enough--i've enjoyed listening to his son from time to time. his commentary for bush jr's second inaugural was hysterically funny.

I guess if Reagan was pretty much brain dead when he ran in the '80s, being physically dead now is no big deal.

27. Republicans Mount Campaign To Rename Alzheimer's 'Reagan's Disease'
WASHINGTON, DC—Seeking to honor the former president and longtime Alzheimer's sufferer, congressional Republicans have mounted a campaign to rename Alzheimer's "Reagan's Disease."

Enlarge ImageArmey urges his fellow legislators to rename Alzheimer's to honor Reagan.

"No one is more strongly associated with this degenerative brain disease than Ronald Reagan, the man who restored pride to America and singlehandedly ended the Cold War," said House Majority Leader Dick Armey, speaking before the House Tuesday. "For all he has given this country, this is the least we can give back."

Armey, co-sponsor of HR 3461, the Reagan's Disease Renaming Bill, is backed by the American Ronald Reagan Recognition Group (ARRRG), a coalition of citizens and business leaders who have championed the cause for more than five years.

"Approximately four million Americans are afflicted with Alzheimer's, and another 37 million know someone suffering from it," said Armey, reading a statement prepared by ARRRG. "To put the name of this great leader on the tips of all these tongues would be a fitting tribute, indeed."

:grr::mad:
Why should he be granted the re-naming of a disease, he and his family denied he had for years? Why should he be the face of a disease that affects people from many walks of life? People that raygun would have had little to no compassion or empathy for in his day?

:puke: The people mounting that campaign need to get a life.
If they want to worship him, that's certainly their choice and right. But don't expect all of us to want to dirty our knees at that bullshit altar with them.

They shook down their sponsors for cash, lodgings, perks, EVERYTHING!1

I feel torn about the latter day Nancy now, and Ron Jr. Nancy is all that stood between the wingnuts and replacing FDR with RAYGUN on the dime. But in her earlier days...
