NEW YORK, N.Y. -- After years of keeping quiet about his personal life, pop star Ricky Martin has announced that he is gay..

"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man," Ricky said in a message posted on his offical Web site. "I am very blessed to be who I am.".

Ricky said writing his memoir and thinking about his two twin sons led him to go public..

"To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where (sic) born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment," he wrote. ..........(more)

1. If you've ever seen one of his videos, heard him perform or heard him sing, he clearly has a strong sexuality YET he remained "single" for so long. I could believe maybe he was asexual for whatever reason if he wasn't throwing himself at the camera for all those years.

2. Even though he's pretty much universally considered hot, talented and has a lot of money, he still remained "single" (or was hiding a relationship), it he were straight he'd just have to pretty much go anywhere and he could have any woman he wanted, but he didn't want them.

3. The biggest thing was when he used a surrogate mother, see my last point - he should've just been able to find a girl and do it the 'regular way' if he were into them.

My guess on 'why now?' is twofold:

(1) he's writing a memoir and wants to promote it. Duh. That's the cynical interpretation and I think it played a part - after all, he's a celebrity and his income depends on keeping his name in the press,

AND...

(2) he looked at the faces of his baby boys and asked himself, "If one or both of them realizes he's queer a few years down the road, do I want him to do so in a world that's as dangerous than the one I grew up in, or do I want him to live in a world that's more educated and welcoming and safer for him? And if I want the latter, what can I, personally, as one individual, do to work toward that goal? Well, OK, that's pretty obvious."

I bet both motives are true. He has a right to both.

He had millions of eyes on him and a lot of pressure to be a sex symbol (primarily) for females. The guy's almost 40 and just got the courage, that should tell you the pressure he was under, and of course he was emasculated, that was the whole point: The general stereotype is that gay guys are feminine (it's not true I know), but he was "supposed to be" seen as masculine.
