White House Asks Reporters to Wear Cancer Bracelets

ABC News' Jessica Yellin Reports: The White House press office has handed out yellow cancer bracelets that say 'Tony Snow' to reporters.

Member of the press office said they would like the press corps to wear these bracelets during Snow's on camera briefing Wednesday, scheduled for 1:00pmET.

Reporters are divided, some plan to wear them but others are aren't.

2. Why should they wear bracelets?
Do they innoculate the wearers from cancer?
Do they cure cancer in Tony Snow?
Do they prevent anyone else from getting cancer?

Do they prove that the wearer is a Bushie?

76. No! That only applies to John Edwards
Didn't you get the talking point?

For John and Elizabeth Edwards, politics is their religion. That's why they're still campaigning.

For Tony Snow, he's returning to work, because hey, he's a brave and courageous man. Besides, as any RWer will tell you, being a propagandist for the Bush mis-administration is "doing God's work".

:sarcasm:

On a personal note. My bride is a breast and thyroid cancer survivor. I would not wish cancer on anyone.

I say, if the presstitutes can wear these bracelets and still ask the tough and pointed questions that need to be asked of this mis-administration, then by all means...wear them.

If they are going to give the man a pass and toss him softballs (like they don't already), then I've got a big problem with it.

Might as well just put leashes and collars on the White House Press Corps anyway.

I certainly don't wish cancer on anyone, but in light of Snow's consistent bullying approach it's appalling to me that any self-respecting reporter would go along with this.

10. Coming from this particular White House, it's just more pressure to conform & be team players...
Nothing against Tony Snow and his struggle with cancer, but Karl Rove's guys just never quit.

The WH Press Corps is NOT supposed to be on Team Bush, and that includes yielding to the pressure for everyone to wear flag pins on their lapels.

Now this. If they don't want to wear the damn bracelets, they look like they're somehow not "supporting" a sick colleague.

If a reporter doesn't wear a bracelet, they'll be considered "uncaring"; if they do, it puts a suggestion in their minds to ask softball questions. "With-us-or-against-us", redux.

34. Yes. Not as capitalistic as this WH nonsence, but
buying a petroleum product to put around ones wrist is wasteful. Lance did ask everyone to buy the petroleum product from his charitable source, but why buy a useless product which goes into the waste can or junk drawer the day after the purchase? Just send money to the cause without the senseless waste of a non-renewal product.

But in our world, capitalism itself is the draw.

The other night at the WH Correspondents dinner, Tony Snow said that he was looking forward to getting back to the WH so he could provide his 'usual Entertainment with his back and forth with the press pool'. This fucker thinks his job is to entertain rather than inform or be accountable. Its just a game to him. Any remaining shred of compassion I had evaporated when I watched him say that the other night.

I wear a Lance bracelet sometimes, and have a pink ribbon on my car urging others to support breast cancer research, and donate to cancer awareness campaigns. I would not, under any circumstances, wear a Tony bracelet, and neither should WH reporters. But, they probably will. Emotional blackmail, pure and simple.

If wearing a yellow Tony Snow Cancer bracelet means you support everything he and Bush believe,I would just assume it was a Lance Armstrong kind of thing supporting cancer research and stuff.I still can dislike someones views and not hate and wish death upon him or her.I refuse to lower myself to that kind of discourse,I was always taught that anger really only hurts the person who is angry, the person they are angry at usually isn't affected by it. 105. See my post #10.This is more about pressure to be on Team Bush
Pulling the strings of sentiment and guilt to once again pressure the formerly-independent White House press corps to conform and fall in line.

The members of the press have already shown support for Tony Snow in his time of tribulation. They are not mean-spirited -- they sent him off with sympathy and welcomed him back warmly. Now, back to the business at hand, please.

This "gesture" doesn't come from the ranks of the press corps -- it comes from Karl Rove's Psy-Ops team. There's nothing wrong with wearing a flag pin on your lapel either, but if everyone at the office looks at you funny if you don't -- then there's something wrong with the picture.

That's the source of my discomfiture.

Hekate

64. Sorry, but this Administration has been all about 'symbols' and stagecraft
since day one. Other than handing out bracelets, what has Bush done for this cause? Did they consider including Elizabeth Edwards with that not to mention the thousands of non-famous persons afflicted every year? Instead, they are making a conscious, opportunistic choice to focus on ONE person that's a top official of the WH.

It symbolizes to the American people that the WH press corps walks hand in hand with the Administration and you can bet it will be punctuated with a nice photo-op.

Normally these things are for charity (Like Lance's Livestrong that started the whole thing)

So giving them out (I imagine Secret Service Agents with boxes at the door of the press room) sorta defeats the prupose no? Furthermore, wouldn't it falsely suggest to Tony Snow that they are supporting cancer research when in reality they were just handed out for a photo-op? Which is just plain mean and ghoulish IMO.

65. I have no feelings for Tony Snow. He came from Fox. He will die with *
in the WH because he is brainwashed. I don't feel sorry for him at all.

Very few in those pressors are professional. Wearing those YellowSnowBracelets is NOT what the press corpse should be doing.

79. They need to raise their sights. Being the nation's watchdog means observing a duty
to focus on the BIG picture, and getting involved in personal lives and health situations of individual people is not professional.

The idea is tacky. Childish. Small town-ish. Stupid. Second rate.

It's not all about any one person, it's about the entire country, and the countries this country impacts for better or for worse.

Draining away their attention to a medical condition of the White House Press spokesman is a diversion from the LARGE matters which are wildly urgent.

This is incredibly inappropriate and the person who made the request should be fired.

96. There's not supposed to be even a hint of collusion
between journalists and those they cover.

If I were still a sportswriter and wore a Giants cap in the AT&T Park press box, I'd be shouted down by the other writers and likely reprimanded by my editor.

If the Giants requested that writers wear their caps, they'd be shouted down in every sports section in the country.

97. There is something very wrong about that.
While I certainly wouldn't wish such an ordeal on Mr. Snow, it almost reeks of manipulation the way the WH press office is admonishing the press to do this. It's just more bait for the RW gasbags to accuse the "liberal media" of not caring about Snow's cancer battle. Sick, and exploitative.

But what's more unbelievable is that Tony Snow is going through what he's going through, and still lies and propagandizes on behalf of Bush with an almost religious fervor. It makes it very hard to feel any sympathy at all for him.

109. Lance Armstrong...
...started the yellow bracelets for his cancer support (LIVESTRONG) organization. Many cancer survivors...including John Kerry...wear them all the time. Watch any of his speeches at johnkerry.com...he's always wearing the yellow cancer bracelet.

Either I'm getting a touch of paranoia, or this is ON PURPOSE. This administration is co-opting the symbol, from Kerry to Bush (via Tony Snow).
