Superman advocates self-reliance over reliance on rescues and bailouts?

Mind you, I wouldn't mind him saying that to a bank exec, but to a person?

It's like he's trying to put himself out of business.

4. The context of that story...
The guy he's talking to is someone who was saved on 2 or 3 separate occasions by Superman. Up until that time, he was a shut-in with little self esteem. But after getting saved, he took on a dangerous lifestyle because he figured that Superman would always have his back. But it turns out that, except for that last save, that he was never actually the focus of Superman's attention. That he didn't die was incidental to what was going on.
