I was talking to my friend today about healthcare.... God I love the minds at DU
Edited on Sun Apr-04-10 09:27 PM by TwixVoy
I was talking to my friend today who I am seriously considering not calling a friend much longer.

This was the conversation

HER: So what do you think of this health care law?
ME: Some kind of reform was needed. What do you think?
HER: I think it's bad.
ME: Why?
HER: Uh well I heard some things on TV I can't remember specifically. It is going to hurt me and you because we are middle class.
ME: How much money did you make last year?
HER: About $13,000 (yes, she considers this middle class)
ME: You are not middle class. Neither am I. You also don't have insurance through work.
HER: Well I think people should just be able to not have it. We shouldn't have to pay for other peoples health care.
ME: So what are you going to do if your 6 year old gets a serious illness and is going to die?
HER: Well I will just sign up for medicaid.

FACEPALM.

She's my friend, but god she is a moron to talk to unless it involves some reality TV show. This is why I love DU so much. I can't seem to locate anyone in real life who isn't a moron.

2. Did you point out
by signing up for Medicaid, she's essentially getting other people to pay for her health care?

I see nothing wrong with helping others but...obviously she has a problem with paying for other people's health care....until she needs someone to pay for her health care.

The point of insurance is to SPREAD the risk around. Even if you receive insurance through work, someone else is helping pay for your care.

8. And you are seeing what Raygun caused even if said person wasn't even born or remembers his reign
errors the talking points remain. They don't want to pay for others but demand others pay for them and theirs. They are entitled because they work hard and pay taxes but only they are doing these things everyone else is just free loading while sitting on their sofa, never mind that these folks might have been working hard a month ago, they did something wrong to lose their job. Remember businesses shutting down is not an excuse for being out of work, its a failing of personal responsibility that the business out sourced, your wages were to high or you took vacations or you dared to get sick.

It goes to the core of the conservative belief system, they believe they make their own luck and they are the masters of their destinies. They think of themselves as the great American pioneer's who ventured out into the wilderness and worked hard at taming the land, like some B western movie. When reality is they happened to have the right skills at the right time and found a place that could they could use those skills. They claim to be seers of the future, when reality is they just stumbled into some niche that needed filling at the moment of time. Everyone else just didn't have their intelligence at fore seeing what was ahead. So they deserve to die of starvation or disease.

3. You could try to keep on educating her until she gets it, or

you could cut your losses, drop her, and move on. Perhaps it is best since you want to emigrate to Europe. You may have different arguments with people there, but they may not be centered around health care.

The only difference on many topics between "moron hood" and "non-moron hood" is info gleaned on DU.

I was reading a letter to the editor. Just recently . The letter writer wss on this huge rant about "You cannot start taxing the top one percent of the people in this nation and expect that action to make up the majority of the tax base. It won't work. That top one percent doesn't have that kind of money."

But from what I have read and learned on DU, I know that letter writer is wrong.

And like your friend who thinks $ 13 K is "middle incomed" the letter writer probably thinks that the upper one percent are worth ten million a piece or so.

13. Your friend is typical.
Misplaced loyalty based on deep stupidity. She thinks she is "one of them", the middle class and wealthy Republicans. They would spit on her.

17. Middle class?
In my State, 13K is 1,500 over the poverty line for a family of 2. So around here, she's probably legally in poverty, after adjustments and such. If not legally, certainly realistically.
