Was the diplomat in custody when he said he was setting his shoes on fire or was he making these comments from a locked bathroom?

If he was in custody and it was clear that there was no danger, then of course shooting or any sort of violence is inappropriate.
If the smoke detectors are going off and the man is locked in the bathroom, telling flight attendants through the door that he is setting his shoes on fire, I understand Aravosis' point.

5. Frankly, I think it's hilarious

Guy was probably having a nic fit, but it's a frustrating experience traveling while being Middle Eastern. It's funny, when I saw the first bit about this on Rachel Maddow tonight, the only real detail was about smoke coming from the bathroom. My first thought was "probably just someone sneaking a smoke." The fact that I even heard about this is ridiculous.

Remember when an ad for Aqua Teen Hunger force brought Boston into a raving panic? Yeah, we probably need to relax a little.
