Malcolm McLaren, the former Sex Pistols manager who is credited with helping form the legendary U.K. punk band, has died at the age of 64 after a battle with cancer. “He had been suffering from cancer for some time, but recently had been full of health, which then rapidly deteriorated,” McLaren’s spokesman Les Molloy told The Independent. Molloy confirmed McLaren died in New York this morning; his body will be moved to London for burial in Highgate Cemetery.

An icon of the punk movement that swept Great Britain in the mid-Seventies, McLaren got his start as a fashion designer who opened up a clothing shop with Vivienne Westwood called Let It Rock. While in New York City to start up a new boutique, he became the New York Dolls manager, a role he held until their breakup in 1976. After working with the Dolls and returning to London, McLaren wanted to start up his own band — the misfit group of punks would later be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the Sex Pistols.

McLaren recruited three local kids who frequented his Kings Road boutique — now called “Sex” — Glenn Matlock, Steve Jones and Paul Cook, and dubbed them the “Sex Pistols.” He first tried out Jones on vocals, but soon found a more suitable provocateur. As Charles M. Young wrote in his 1977 RS Sex Pistols cover story, “One of the regulars at Sex was a kid named John Lydon, who was distinguished on three counts: 1) his face had the pallor of death; 2) he went around spitting on poseurs he passed on the street; and 3) he was the first to understand the democratic implications of punk — rather than pay ten pounds for an ugly T-shirt with holes in it, he took a Pink Floyd T-shirt, scratched holes in the eyes and wrote I HATE over the logo. McLaren stood him in front of the jukebox, had him mouth Alice Cooper’s ‘I’m Eighteen’ and declared him their new lead singer. Jones noticed the mung on Lydon’s never-brushed teeth, and christened him Johnny Rotten.”

McLaren amped up the new band’s notoriety with a stunt that featured the Pistols performing “God Save the Queen” on a barge during the same week of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. McLaren was arrested before the stunt was pulled off, but the single immediately topped the British charts. After releasing Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, the band embarked on a tour of the U.S. and ultimately split. For years, McLaren and Lydon fought over the Sex Pistols’ copyright and royalties in a rift that was never healed.

2. Malcolm McLaren, he was both an asshole and a genius.
As Steve Jones once said regarding the question of who was responsible for the Sex Pistols' success: "It would have never worked without Malcolm, and it never would have worked without us".

McLaren's claim of "creating" punk rock was obviously a huge exaggeration, but he definitely played a role in expanding it to the UK.

3. Let's not forget his contribution to the idea of turntable as musical instrument
Buffalo Gals comes to mind. He was right there with the likes of Herbie Hancock and other pioneers.

8. Saw the Pistols playing in London in '09 (On TV) - they are absolutely GREAT!!!
I really love the band and Johnny has improved some, although he still spits.

Steve Jones is one of my all time favorite guitar players and the drummer Paul Cook is amazing! Very tight, tough sounding band, great to see live.

Sorry Malcom - You had a good idea, but they made the music.

12. Featuring, if I remember correctly, the late Willi Ninja
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willi_Ninja

Benny Ninja has taken over the House of Ninja, and it looks like he's representing Willi's mission just fine.

10. Met him a few years ago at a hoity-toity club
he was trying to sucker rich folks out of their money for some 'bit-pop' label/film he was going to create. Got a lot of face time with him because he kept bumming smokes off me outside. Turned out to be a much nicer guy than I'd imagined.

Rest in peace--the world woul be a sorrier place had you not been in it, Mr. McLaren.

16. There used to be a tiny hole in the wall record shop in Palo Alto...
...that was one of the few in the area that got import 45s on a regular basis. They'd get snapped up pretty quickly...you had to know what was coming and when and swoop down on the place on "new releases day." I got all of the Sex Pistols' singles there, like "God Save The Queen" in the pic below. That one had the b-side "Did You No Wrong," which was one of the fiercest, most straight-ahead flat-out rock & roll songs the band ever recorded. Heard it on the radio, had to have it.

:-)

In 2010, iPods and iTunes and MP3s are all the rage, but nothing will ever replace the days of being a "regular" in a cramped, dusty, poorly-lit, amazing, bursting-with-character, non-chain "record store."

17. Little pieces of youth fall away, one at a time, like leaves on a tree...
...the only hero from my "yonger days" who's still alive is Neil Young. The big three, for me, were Young, Lennon, and Zappa. Lots of secondary heroes after that, but they were at the top. Part of me still wants to strap on my Les Paul and play "Down By The River" for about an hour. On some days, I do.

19. Statement from John Lydon's website
Malcolm McLaren RIP

"For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you"

Johnny Rotten

Probably the nicest thing Johnny ever said about him.

21. Still wish I had the tape with him and the World Famous Supreme Team.
Great stuff, and not just "Buffalo Gals" either. "Hobo Scratch" and "Do Ya Like Scratchin'" are urban classics. Watched some of that on YouTube yesterday. It brought back memories of shows like Night Flight, when I was 13-14. It also reminded me of a time when MTV played music and wasn't a bitchy princess-fest.

RIP.
