I want to work here: Workers strike over ban on drinking at work
Workers strike over ban on drinking at work

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - A few hundred warehouse workers and drivers at Danish brewer Carlsberg halted work for a second day on Thursday to protest a company decision to limit beer drinking at work to lunch breaks.

The strike in Denmark followed the company's April 1 decision to introduce new rules for employees on beer drinking at work, said Jens Bekke, spokesman at the world no.4 brewer.

"There has been free beer, water and soft drinks everywhere," he said. "Yesterday, beers were removed from all refrigerators. The only place you can get a beer in future is in the canteen, at lunch."

Bekke said drivers retained an old right to three beers per day outside lunch hours, and warehouse workers claimed the same right.

4. I was taken on a tour of the Budweiser brewery in LA back in 1972.
It was for a class on serving beer properly. I was a bartender at the time and the class had started at eight in the morning. I had worked a night shift getting off at 2:30 in the morning the previous night. Needless to say, I was short on sleep. There were taps in the plant where workers could pour a brew if they got thirsty. We, on the tour, were offered a brewski at 10:00 AM in the morning. I refused. I needed coffee. Times are a achanging it seems.

5. Switzerland, too

The company I worked for had a machine tech flown in from Switzerland, which was where the machine was manufactured. The guy came in bright and early one morning and commenced to do what he does....... fix the damned thing! At lunchtime he broke out a lunch box he had prepared. He unwrapped a sandwich of some type, and a piece of fruit. After a couple of bites, he reached in and pulled out a beer!
I explained to him that drinking beer on the premises was not permitted and was in fact not legal, either, but I wasn't telling anyone as long as he kept it on the down-low. He was in between a couple of large machines and went unnoticed. He said they had beer in the vending machines at the factory where he worked! Now there's the place to work!

edit: this was obviously his first trip to the states

7. I worked in a small assembly plant where we could drink beer all day.
The boss didn't give a shit, as long as the work got done with no mistakes. We had a well stocked fridge in the shop.

We were assembling electrical/pneumatic stuff, like big compressor controllers.

Great job & paid well too.

8. If I recall workers at some breweries drank beer on the job in the US years ago.
I'm sure farmers drank beer in between jobs years ago too.

I know my great great uncles/great great grandfather brewed their own beer too.

10. In 1974 I worked at the Old Style brewery here in La Crosse and they drank beer at work then.
The funny thing was that I didn't drink beer at all. I don't think I ever saw so many guys with beer guts though.
