Gov. Jennifer Granholm is dangling a retirement carrot in front of long-time teachers, asking them to retire at the end of the school year.
And local union leaders are calling it unfair.
The state’s retirement-enticement proposal could save Michigan up to $450 million, but the largest teacher’s union, the Michigan Education Association, and leaders from the Bay City Education Association say she is trying to take away their members’ promised benefits.
“We stand against this proposal,” said Kevin Stapish of the Bay City Education Association, an affiliate of the Michigan Education Association. “It is wrong to choose between early retirement and the benefits they’ve been promised and are looking forward to.”
The government reform plan attempts to entice 46,000 public employees, who have at least 30 years of experience, to retire by Oct. 1. About 39,000 of those employees are public school teachers.
Not retiring would cost them their dental and vision benefits, and they would have to contribute an additional 3 percent to their retirement fund.
