The Detroit News: Granholm reportedly on Supreme Court short list

Jennifer Granholm, Governor of Michigan
51 Years Old
J.D. Harvard Law School
Catholic

Washington -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm's name resurfaced today as being on the much-speculated-about short list of possible successors to retiring Supreme Justice John Paul Stevens.

"First Read," NBC's weekday morning update e-mail, reported "people outside the government but familiar with White House thinking say the serious contenders" are Granholm and four others.

The Associated Press reported today, "The president is seriously reviewing about 10 people," including the term-limited Granholm who is in her final year as Michigan's Democratic governor...

Granholm was vetted for Obama's first opening, the retirement of David Souter, who was replaced by Sonia Sotomayor.

But Richard Friedman, a University of Michigan law professor and expert on the Supreme Court, has noted that being passed over doesn't necessarily mean you won't eventually find yourself on the court: President Bill Clinton passed over Stephen Breyer for his first Supreme Court opening, but then nominated him when he had a second opportunity.

Bay City union calling Granholm's teacher retirement-enticement unfair
By Andrew Dodson | The Bay City Times

Gov. Jennifer Granholm is dangling a retirement carrot in front of long-time teachers, asking them to retire at the end of the school year.

And local union leaders are calling it unfair.

The state’s retirement-enticement proposal could save Michigan up to $450 million, but the largest teacher’s union, the Michigan Education Association, and leaders from the Bay City Education Association say she is trying to take away their members’ promised benefits.

“We stand against this proposal,” said Kevin Stapish of the Bay City Education Association, an affiliate of the Michigan Education Association. “It is wrong to choose between early retirement and the benefits they’ve been promised and are looking forward to.”

The government reform plan attempts to entice 46,000 public employees, who have at least 30 years of experience, to retire by Oct. 1. About 39,000 of those employees are public school teachers. Not retiring would cost them their dental and vision benefits, and they would have to contribute an additional 3 percent to their retirement fund.

2. No that bad
The states in trouble, and its putting pressure on older employees to retire. She probably does not want to do it but no money is no money (though they must be able to take it from a better place than education, ). Of course the union would be upset by any policy to get rid of workers.

3. It's unconscionable to put that kind of pressure on older workers!
No money? Build a few less bombs. Leave our teachers alone.
