A Spy Takes the Spotlight

When Michael Garin, who plays the piano at Elaine’s on Sunday nights, started “Secret Agent Man,’’ few patrons noticed as the man in the blue blazer and gray slacks at the front table pulled off his shoe and did his best Maxwell Smart.

Not long afterward, however, that conventional-looking guy stood up, took the mike and offered a spirited rendition of Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken,’’ drawing rousing applause. His name was R. James Woolsey Jr., and he is a former C.I.A. director.

“Who knew?’’ Mr. Garin cried out. “Who knew?”
