The Icelandic Volcano: The Absolute Correct Pronunciation |
|
I've noticed a few threads on here curious about it so I decided just to make this post to put any debate to rest. I speak some Icelandic and thus can say it quite easily.
Eyjafjallajökull is pronounced thus:
AY-ya-fya-khla-yer-kookhl
The "ey" is as in the English "day." The "ll" sound in icelandic is sort of a gutteral "khl" sound made by curling the tongue up to the soft palate then pronouncing a deep-throated "k" while pulling the tongue down and forward. The "ö" is pronounced as a "er" as in "father" but with less of an R. The "u" is pronounced like the "oo" in the English "book." The "j" is pronounced like the English "y" in "yes."
