Oh Arizona, and this bill |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 09:40 PM by nadinbrzezinski
two things caught my attention. One they can ask for papers to ANYBODY... no, not a smidgen of potential here for harassment.
Two: You too will have to carry proof of residency with you at all times. Well if you happen to be a green card holder, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO... but the local cops don't have the authority to demand them. Now you have to show proof of residency and right to work when you apply to a job, and to ICE if they should ask for them. THAT'S IT.
(Of course there are a few other FEDERAL requirements that you need to comply as a legal resident, but the local cops don't have a right to enforce them)
This is why this is so damn scary.
If she signs it I am almost tempted to go there, GET DEPORTED and then take the damn thing to the courts... but I don't have that kind of time or money and I am too white.
But the danger is that this will expand, mark my words. You think Texas is not paying attention to this? Or for that matter some of the far right in California?
Ah yes, at one time the old saying said, no Irish, Italians or Negros allowed.
These days it is... no hispanics and sadly blacks remain on the list. And these are the same people who's grand parents were in many cases the targets of this crap! Amazing, but not surprising.
Oh and let me add, I ain't going to Arizona... I am respecting that boycott.

1. I left the state of Arizona, with no intention of returning |
|
since Feb of 2002 after one year (had to keep my lease on my apartment on Broadway and Craycroft in Tucson or find myself homeless)
Back to my state of birth, living here, more than 8 years and ticking.

2. Hubby and I were talking about it |
|
we actually considered this going 'ver there... I am of Mexican descent.
Make sure though that I have enough Pesos with me to fly from Juarez to Tijuana, pick up passport and then go to the courts.
Alas I may have an accent, but I am way too white.

We'd love to have you - we're easy, laid back and the Rockies are just practically in your backyard.
We've got a Dem Gov, Dem Senators, Dem Colorado legislature, and if you decide to live in Denver, a pro-choice wonderful Representative - Diana DeGette.

3. The state is broke and they're throwing money away... |
|
first it was joining the lawsuit on HCR now it's this which the state will surely be sued over. Lawyers cost money. They spent boatloads on Ken Starr to represent the state in a suit on educating ELL kids. It's irresponsible. I hope Brewer vetoes it but I'm not holding my breath. The only way she would veto to bill is if she sees an opportunity to appear more moderate compared to the two RW loons running for Governor. If she's more moderate, they would compete for the wingnut vote and she'd clean up. That's my thinking, for what it's worth.
It's a sad sad situation here in Arizona, or should I saw, nuAlabama?

6. Well if this helps historically this is not that strange |
|
And it should pass... I hope.
But every time the economy goes into the crapper things like this multiply, and we hate immigrants in this country... oy

and I am all but a fan of Joe... to me if there is a hell, not that I believe in one, that is where Joe will end when he dies.

13. He probably drafted the legislation--except if he did, he'd be all over it |

claiming credit.
I love this state, but I loathe its politics.

but here is what people missed from what Keith said... back in the days of Wyatt Earp they did pretty much similar stuff against the Mexicans... they were ok to work low wage work, but seen, not heard.
Oh and Lemon Grove, here in California, had things like... teach only English.

11. It's the Sheriff Joe Arpaio Enabling and Protecting Act, pure and simple |
|
Since Sheriff Joe sends his henchmen, errr, deputies, out to investigate prominent citizens, businessmen, and pols who dare criticize him or suggest he needs some watching.... Well, one might wonder who all in the state legislature got blackmailed into a bill that looks to give Joe a lot of cover for antics he could be sued or jailed for.
Yep, BOYCOTT ARIZONA!

12. I think that the governor won't sign it and it will become law |
|
If Brewer doesn't sign the bill in 5 days it automatically becomes law. Then she can have it both ways.

15. "The Doing Anything at All While Brown Makes You a Criminal Act." |
|
I was appalled at "English Only" here--if I had ANY resources at all at my disposal, I would leave in a heartbeat.
This bill is VILE, pure and simple.
