5 Students Expelled For Using ‘Axe’ To Start Fires

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Five Federal Way middle school students have been expelled for using Axe body spray to make flame throwers, reported our partner The News Tribune.

Superintendent Tom Murphy sent a letter home to parents warning them of the Internet fad. Murphy said in the letter, “Children are using Axe body spray, a popular cologne among young people, to light themselves or their clothing on fire.”

He said, “A number of students this year have been expelled for lighting themselves or their clothing on fire with Axe at school.”

School spokeswoman Deb Stenberg told the paper no injuries or damages have been reported in the incidents.

5. It was popular in movies too to get the bad guys when no weapon was available
Hair spray was popular as a flamethrower.

20. I recall that AquaNet was pretty much the ultimate potato-gun fuel.
I remember that a good spray of AquaNet would fire a potato chunk with such force that a wet potato marking on the wall was just about the only thing left. Oh how I miss my teenaged years.

3. This seems like a self-solving issue, no?
“Children are using Axe body spray, a popular cologne among young people, to light themselves or their clothing on fire.”

Stupid has consequences... I vote for the school to let Darwin send out his awards.

4. Wait a minute.....
Those last 2 sentences:

He said, “A number of students this year have been expelled for lighting themselves or their clothing on fire with Axe at school.”

YET...no harm?

School spokeswoman Deb Stenberg told the paper no injuries or damages have been reported in the incidents.

So the kids manage to flame themselves with " no injuries or damages".

How do you light yourself on fire with no injuries or damages?

6. I used to do it when I was a kid with cheap aftershave
the alcohol burns off. You can put your hand out with your palm up and pour it into your hand and light it and it will burn without burning you. You can pour it on your blue jeans and the same sort of thing. Let me be clear I'm not saying anyone should do that or try that of course and surely there is a risk involved if it goes wrong so nobody should do that.

13. Yep. Alcohol burns with a low flame...
So you can set yourself on fire with this stuff for short periods of time without getting burned.

Of course, if you don't put yourself out, or miss a spot, or something else catches, you'll get hurt.

Doesn't stop the Beavis & Butthead crowd, though.

19. Indeed. Gasoline does not burn with a low flame.
You'll end up a burn ward poster child trying this with gasoline...

8. I had a "friend" in high school that would spread sterno on his pants and light it up.
Never burned himself.

Note the quotes.

11. Aquanet was the fuel of choice when I was in school. They
would spray a desk top with it and light it on fire. This led to a "science of fire" lecture by our Chem teacher when he walked in and caught them at it once.

12. What is with the zero-tolerance "Expel-them-all!!!" attitude?
Edited on Wed Apr-21-10 10:17 AM by backscatter712
They're teenagers! They do stupid things sometimes. Does that justify throwing them out of school, wrecking their chances for college, pissing on their lives for years?

Why is detention and in-school-suspension an insufficient punishment for this sort of thing?

Besides, I did that with mosquito spray when I was in Boy Scouts!

17. They were readmitted after they took a course.
I think expulsion was warranted in this case.

18. Whatever happened to simple "Axe Bombs"
It was a popular prank in college. We'd get these little sample spray bottles of Axe in our welcome kits, so what people would do is rig the bottle to keep spraying with duct tape, then throw it into an unsuspecting person's room. It would take days to get the smell down to a bearable level.

BTW, I had this happen to me whilst I was in the room. Not fun. To this day I can't stand people who use too much cologne/perfume/body spray.
