pot can help make kids smarter |
|
well, if it was legalized and the sale of it taxed by the states, that is. I bet part of that revenue stream would go a long way toward fixing our very broken education system.
Also, we could cut out a bunch of wasted "drug war" funding from the budget, and fund our schools with that too.
I don't understand why people don't see this.
California should try it, and see what happens. Pot seems like it's almost legal in a bunch of places there already anyway, so why not just go for it?

1. Um, my husband teaches at an alternative high school. All the kids there smoke weed. |
|
And they are very difficult to teach. They're always talking about 'functional users'. He says he sees the user, but the 'functional' part is missing.

2. I didn't say they should smoke it. |

If it was regulated like alcohol...well, they probably still would anyway, but at least it might be harder for them to get than it is now.

11. How hard is it for an adult to buy beer then give it to a teenager? |
|
If people want it then they will get it.

but that doesn't mean I think alcohol should be outlawed again, either.
My point is, it's pretty easy for kids to get weed now, evidently...legalizing it might actually slow them down.

4. Correlation is not causation - maybe your husband's students are just stupid. |
|
Or maybe they don't care about learning. They are in an "alternative" school for a reason...

if the kid wants to learn, they will unless there are other problems that impair their learning process.

I smoked a fatty just prior to passing my Mensa entrance exams with flying colors... you can't paint everyone with that broad brush... and I think it's dangerous to do so, especially with kids.
High IQ students are exceedingly difficult to teach most of the time... maybe we should outlaw them.

6. Must be the pot that is the problem then |
|
No other variables, or reasons why theyd be doing drugs in the first place. Probably a bunch of upper class kids from perfect homes too.

8. Actually, this is part of the problem of it being illegal |
|

There is an amotivational phase that people succumb to, if they're not taught how to work through it. If the stigma were removed, it would be easier to a) deal with kids who smoke it during school; and b) teach kids the right way to use it.
It's not the pot that hinders learning, it's the kids and the culture.
Drugs, in general, should be discussed more openly, since we're hard-wired with the desire to alter our reality.

21. Almost true. Late or early harvest determines uppy or downy. |
|
And that is the difference with med mar. Since it is less illegal etc, it arrives fresher. With more of the delta 9 THC intact. If it were grown commercially, they could make it all early harvest, and avoid the whole couchlock thing.

13. Does your husband try to discern WHY his students smoke pot? |
|
Or does he just assume they don't perform to his expectation because they smoke pot? Careful how you answer.

3. OP didn't mean give it to the kids, sell it for profit to help fund education |
|
they should do that with alcohol sales and tax too.
I don't live in california (wish I did), but in any state, any extra funding for education would be deeply appreciated, by hook or crook, get the money, it will be well worth it for our children.

10. Lets mug people, to give money and help to the mugged. |

Lets tax all fun, or pleasant things, to fund our infrastructure. When the American system is funded by scams, gotchas, hahas, visitors, foreigners, illnesses, tragedy, WE SUCK.

14. you can grow your own, you know |
|
it's a plant that grows out of the ground.
Packaged and sold, it's a luxury item. Personally, I love booze, but I'm not inclined to distill my own. I don't mind paying taxes on it when I buy it at the liquor store, especially if the end result is a well maintained infrastructure (which it's not, at this point, but in principle it could be).

I don't drink that kind.
And yeah, I don't know how legal pot would be priced...but hopefully it might be lower than it is now, and of consistent quality.
Caveat: medical pot should be provided free to patients, imo. But I'm a dirty red and all, so...

15. There are lots of things that could help fund education. |
|
The trouble is that it never works that way, state lotteries are a prime example. When funds come from another source they just cut the general funding and the kids get shorted again. But I agree that legal pot would help cut spending and raise revenue.

19. I believe the way around that would be to make part of the law |
|
dedicating the existing floor percentage or a very close proximity of the state's budget for education as a base amount regardless of additional funds from the tax on Marijuana, lottery proceeds etc.

on prisons, court costs and social services for families destroyed or broken up by the existing dysfunctional policy.
