D-Back Protest Update: Cubs Smack Down Immigrant Rights Message
posted by Dave Zirin on 04/27/2010 @ 6:26pm

The call is growing to boycott and protest the Arizona Diamondbacks wherever they play in response to the monstrously named "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act" SB 1070. The owners of the D-backs, the Kendrick family have, as leading funders of the state Republican party, underwritten the political bottom feeders who passed the bill. The Kendrick's team also plays in a stadium Chase Field, that received $250 million in public funds. In other words, in a scheme that could be described as political money laundering, they have taken the people's money with one hand and with the other used it to bankroll state-apartheid.

People in Denver are organizing to protest the Diamondbacks when they play the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night and in Chicago where this weekend they play the Cubs.

But Major League Baseball won't make it easy for us to "politicize" the games. (Only owners like the Kendricks get to play the sports/politics game.) The Center for New Community, a national civil and immigrant rights organization, attempted to buy three 5th Inning messages on the Cubs Scoreboard for Sunday's game. They would have said the following:

1). Cubs Welcome Arizona Immigrant Players. Repeal SB-1070!

2). Cubs Welcome All Immigrants. Repeal AZ SB-1070!

3). Cubs Welcome D-Backs Please Repeal Arizona SB-1070! .........(more)

1. The family that bought the Cubs are republicans.

That said, I haven't heard of anything particularly evil they have done. They don't seem to be anything like coal mine owners.

4. And, the MLB commissioner is an even bigger one
Bud Selig, friend of the Bushes. It wouldn't surprise me if he is somehow involved.

2. Arizona's response to: "1). Cubs Welcome Arizona Immigrant Players. Repeal SB-1070!,
2). Cubs Welcome All Immigrants. Repeal AZ SB-1070!

3). Cubs Welcome D-Backs Please Repeal Arizona SB-1070!"

would likely be:

1). Arizona asks Cubs' Immigrant Players to line up for a check of your papers.
1a). (forgot there's no profiling) Arizona asks all Cubs Players to line up for an inspection of your papers.

2). Arizona asks Cubs to send immigrant players home to create jobs for American baseball players.

3). Arizona Welcomes Cubs, Please Illinois pass a law similar to SB-1070!

Not too far fetched since the Diamondbacks owners are the "the Kendrick family have, as leading funders of the state Republican party, underwritten the political bottom feeders who passed the bill." Maybe the DBacks will set an example of how to enforce the new law with gusto. :)

3. notice they passed this legislation AFTER spring training was over
and all the MLB teams drew all that tourism (and all the "illegal immigrants cleaned up the trash for pennies on the U.S. citizen's wage") ...

...the republicans lost both houses of Congress and the White House. This bullshit law was enacted as much as an attempt to embarrass President Obama and the Democrats as it is to disenfranchise Hispanic voters.

Where were McCain, Kyl, et al., all these years? If things were so bad all this time, why didn't they push hard to do something about it when their party was in power? The disingenuous SOBs.

6. Well then I guess it'll be up to the fans in the stands. .
I hope that there will be non-corporate cell phone in the stadiums....;)
