Betty Lou Lynn, who played Thelma Lou on "The Andy Griffith Show," pauses at a statue of Andy and Opie Taylor in Mount Airy, N.C., in 2007.

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. - The actress who played Thelma Lou on "The Andy Griffith Show" was robbed in the town that inspired the show's idyllic Mayberry setting, after moving to the area to avoid big city crime.

Betty Lou Lynn had her wallet stolen at a shopping center in Mount Airy, the birthplace of Andy Griffith.

The Mount Airy News reports that police arrested Shirley Walter Guynn of Cana, Va. He's being held in Surry County Jail on a $10,000 bond. It was not immediately clear Thursday if he has a lawyer.

In an earlier interview with the newspaper, the 83-year-old Lynn said she moved to Mount Airy after being robbed three times in Los Angeles. In the TV series, Thelma Lou was the girlfriend of Deputy Barney Fife, played by Don Knotts.

That's what his parents got for naming him Shirley
a lifetime of bailing the bastard out of jail.

Crime happens everywhere, even Mayberry. That's why they needed cops in the first place.

A real desperado, if ever there was one...

Hey, WI_DEM! Did you know Jack Nicholson was on not one but two episodes of the "Andy Griffith Show?"

Aunt Bee, the Juror" (1967)

Opie Finds a Baby (1966)

5. Can I put my bullet in Andy?
I'm way too young for that show but I saw them all in repeats and just loved them. Don Knotts was brilliant.

2. His first name is Shirley? Ouch.
I remember passing that area in 1980 and seeing "Mayberry Shopping Plaza" while driving by.

11. Actually, Shirley was more commonly a man's name --
back in the day. I had an uncle by marriage named Shirley, whose family was French and from Louisiana.

"Some names that were once predominantly used as masculine given names are now primarily feminine given names in the United States, including Alexis, Ashley, Beverly, Brittany, Carol, Evelyn, Hilary, Jocelyn, Kelly, Meredith, Shirley, Shannon, Sharon, and Vivian."

15. Great info, thanks. I have known male Kellys and Shannons.
I have heard of males called Beverly, Carol (or Carroll), Ashley (Gone w/the Wind). but the rest were a surprise.

I have a special place in my heart for him. Sorry to hear crime is creeping in on Betty Lynn's Mayberry. I've introduced my son to that show. He likes it, but doesn't understand why it's in B/W. I loved all of them on the show when I was growing up - especially Gomer, but Andy reminds me sooooo much of my dad - looks, voice, mannerisms, even his whistle ;)

Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and
meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
We may not get a bite all day,
but don't you rush away.

What a great place to rest your bones and
mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade,
a-settin' in the shade.

Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a
spot for whistlin' like a fool.

What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by
The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way
to pass the time o'day.
