Host (C-SPAN's Bill Scanlan): "Salmon, Idaho...Domenici...Dominick...excuse me...Dominick
on our Independents' line...Go ahead.
Caller: "Yes...uh...Mr. Wolfowitz...um...I'm really upset that, right now,
that down in the gulf we've got all this oil coming out...and...um...that...th
...th...the President is supposed to stop it. No! the oil companies are
supposed to stop it. Let's get this straight, and I hope that you can get your
banking friends and help stop it, too. But what I'm really...really mad about
is I've got a lot of kids around here that were killed in Iraq and...uh...
they're really good kids. I mean they're going to be fine young men when
they grew up - they were the best in Montana, and I'm a three-tour Vietnam
veteran, and I want to let you know, sir...there's people out here like me
that know what you did. You made up a lie to start that war. We're broke
as hell. We can't even fix the oil mess. The oil companies can't fix it.
Our country's going down the tubes because of you. How come they haven't
fired you and put you and the rest of those guys in jail..."
Host: "Alright...."
Caller: "and taken all your money...?"
Host: "Alright...Dominick...you...you have made your point. Care to respond?"
Paul Wolfowitz: "Look...wars are terrible.
We got into this war because we
were attacked...uh...We would be having a problem in Iraq today if...if Saddam Hussein
were still there. We'd have a big problem. I spent a lot of time with people who were
wounded...with families who've lost their kids...uh...It is a terrible thing; I
understand that pain. But, let me be clear about one thing. There were no lies. We
acted on the basis of intelligence that...uh...everyone agreed with, and now they're
running away from those same judgments.
The fact is this was a dangerous man.
The danger was a little bit different from what we estimated, but he was dangerous."
