Has DU helped shape or change your opinions?
If so, how?

If not, why?

I can easily think of two things. One, I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart and two, I became more resolved in my opposition to the death penalty. I had thought maybe it was needed in extreme situations, like serial killers. Now, I don't think the state has the right to take anyone's life.

Your turn.

1. I'm still pro-gun control. But I am no longer anti-gun.

I don't own a gun and doubt I ever will. But thanks to the gun discussions on DU, I now believe that someone of legal adult age who doesn't have a criminal record should be able to get one if they wanted to--with the proper background checks, waiting periods, and such.

8. That's interesting
There does seem to be a vocal gun contingent for such a generally liberal board.

Do you think there should be limits on the type of guns or the quantity a citizen can legally possess?

True story: I'm quite anti-gun and won't even let my husband bring a special collector's gun home because I don't ever want a gun in the house. When we visit his mom, she always gives us her bedroom and takes the twin bed in the spare. We had slept there several times already when one night a discussion of guns came up. I went on about my position, and then she said, "I guess I shouldn't tell you then that there's a loaded gun under the mattress."

2. I've had 68 years to formulate opinions on most things,
DU helps me keep up to date on the assholes and what they're doing to us. It helps me put my opinions to use, and on the rare occasion formulate new ones when needed. It's also a place to blow off some steam when I need to. I'm thankful that
I found it.

3. Yes, in a lot of ways. I'm much more informed and far less
tolerant of people I don't agree with. Sad but true. I get/got tired of arguing with people who have an opinion but no facts to back it up.
Ditto about WalMart; haven't shopped there in years and cancelled Sam's Club membership.
I've become much more aware of the media and how they've become so partisan most of the time.
I've embraced Keith Olbermann!
And after being subjected to FR links (and some people) I've come to the conclusion that liberals are far more accepting and just plain nicer.

Next!

5. Not yet, but ...
I wouldn't say it's changed any yet, but it's made me question old assumptions, and I'm sure it'll change something one day. If anything it's reinforced my leftishness - it's easy to wobble when there's so much at stake, but revisiting the issues is a good opportunity to refresh your perspective.

6. I have learned so much from so many...and I have
hopes that I have given something back to others.

I have always been anti-bush, from the day of the election right up to today, but the members of DU have helped me clarify my positions on precisely why I despise the shitweasel...For that, I am grateful and in debt to DU and it's members.

7. I've gotten a political education here that's not possible to get anywhere else.
The diversity and differing opinions make for great reading and debate. It's opened my eyes to a LOT that's going on in our Country.

Thanks DU & DU'ers!
