Just finished a Harris Poll from Whole Foods.
When I'm asked why I like Trader Joe's better than Whole Foods, I'm pretty certain that the poll is being paid for by Whole Foods.

Is it remotely possible that I'm not the only one who stopped shopping there when the CEO tried to destroy the healthcare initiative? Now that the bill has passed, I do buy things there occasionally, but nothing like I used to.

14. NO. I volunteered a good deal about it, though.
They also asked if Whole Foods had the image of being good to its employees and I told them NO.

8. Still boycotting and I boycotted prior to the assholes oped.
Whole Foods is anti-union and lobbies to relax organic standards. And really, what are the chances that organic food from China is actually organic.

15. True that. Why don't you suggest to me what language I might use to distinguish
between organic food (and it's commonly recognized definition) and every other thing that contains carbon.

I suppose I could ALWAYS elaborate for the few who might not understand what organic food is. How does this sound? Organic food is food that is produced without using most conventional pesticides, fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge, bioengineering, ionizing radiation, antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is a product of an agricultural ecological production management system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. It is based on minimal use of off-farm inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony.

3. That and WF is a hell of a lot pricier than TJ's
I sure wish they'd brought in a TJ's than the usually-empty WF's down the road. They cut back the salad bar so we don't even go there any longer.

5. Salad Bar is a rip-off. It's food past or near expiration...
... and then they charge you like 10 times what the food would be worth packaged and fresh.

6. You should steal something from there like Marc Maron does.
I'm kidding.

Stealing is wrong.

7. Won't even think of going there
Their prices were pissing me off before the CEO went teabag on HCR. Fuck. him. Plus there's a TJ's nearby anyway.

10. They were going to build a Whole Foods just blocks from my house.....
but the deal fell through just after the site was excavated, leaving a block-sized hole.

Now we call it Hole Foods.

11. The "co-op industry"--
has become laughable.

I've shopped at them all, just about, but I remember when the first co-ops were tiny places with bulk foods like beans and rice in bins. You could buy a 50-pound bag of brown rice for a very small amount of money. You also might be able to be directed to a small bakery (two or three bakers) with some very good bread.

But this, like so many ideas, became an industry. Alfalfa's was bought by Whole Foods when I worked in Boulder. Alfalfa's was a joke--you'd see women getting dressed up in their high heeled shoes just to go to the grocery store. When my oldest daughter was a student at C.U., she thought it was perfectly logical to buy her lettuce at the Whole Foods salad bar!

Trader Joe's isn't as ridiculous yet; I was there yesterday, but I wouldn't buy a week's worth of groceries there. I love their merchandise, and TJs seems more reasonably priced for the industry.

But make no mistake about it, even Trader Joe's is heading for a certain market. The music playing there yesterday was pointed at the younger boomer crowd; it was music from the seventies. I knew the lyrics from all of the songs. Was this supposed to make me nostalgic as I shopped?...

13. Trader Joes Whole Foods
they are not the same. Trader Joes produce just isn't that good. Some things are similar, but for me Trader Joe's is the replacement for Albertson's/Dominick's/Publix/Jewell...and your typical large corporate food chain.
