Time to pull the fire handle with this spill. |
|
BP and company are apparently not equipped to fix their mess. I personally believe this is orders of magnitude worse than the worst estimate. These guys have done damage that will take decades to recover from. I have worked on systems at Idaho Falls where catastrophic or runaway failure sequences end in death. Those systems , naval reactors, are highly regulated, documented, and structured. Mechanisms are in place to deal with failures, even catastrophic ones. They did not engineer failure into their system. That is obvious.
In my opinion these guys are playing with a fucking pickup team, and in reactive mode. They are not ahead of the problem.
The US government MUST step up and bring in everyone. Woods Hole, Navy resources that can and do operate at that depth, and whomever is the best civilian operator in the world.
BP should be figuring out how they are going to pay for this giant catastrophic fuckup they created.
Please call your reps, this is cross isle and should they should support this being escalated.

9. Nothing will change until individual execs get the jail time they deserve. |

Don't want to risk the jail time? Don't be an overpaid exec for a company with filthy ethics.

they do not have a clear idea of how much oil or how much damage is happening right now.

why hasn't the US Navy put that location firmly under their own control? Why isn't it being treated as a crime scene? Sure, let the necessary BP guys stay and do what they have to do to help. But keep em on a short leash. The Navy should be running this shit.

April 20 to May 17, nearly 1 month they've had to fuck things up even worse with their dispersents, and lack of knowhow. Kill their shit and get someone with half a clue.

16. The blowout is analogous to a wild fire cause by timber industry logging |
|
on National Forest lands.
The fire command goes by law to the US Forest Service and is under the FEMA Incident Command Structure depending upon the extend and threat of the incident. Federal environmental laws still are considered in fire suppression (ideally).
Many (and apologists) at DU do not get the use of Categorical Exemptions (under NEPA) and lack of compliance to Endangered Species and other protective laws is so insanely outrageous relative to NEPA compliance.

It's time to get ahead of this damage...BP lost its credibility long ago and cannot be depended upon to tell the truth let alone fix this problem. It's time for the Government to step in.

18. This man-made disaster |
|
should be treated like an attack by a foreign country - the Government should go into emergency mode to stop the spread up the east coast and beyond. Resources are being waste, the environment is being poisoned and the planet's eco-system is at stake.
BP proved long ago that it cannot handle this. Whether or not the Government is up to the task is questionable..if national resources can't fix it solicit international assistance. Bite the bullet and swallow your f*** pride.....The ocean are a universal resource that is in jeopardy. Whether or not the Gulf can be restored or is lost is not the issue. This should be treated as a planetary crisis.

The oil has to be stopped.
However, so much time has gone by, that the oil already in thr Gulf and now the loop current will cause major damage. In addition, the dispersants are toxic, and there is no way to tell what harm they will do.
Too little. Too late.
The government should have yanked BP out of control and made sure vital personnel who could help weren't allowed to leave. All records of any types should have been maintained to try to understand what happened and what may happen.
Independent scientists and petroleum engineers plus people with deep water drilling experience should have been brought in. In regard to drilling, I'm not sure who could be found not associated with the oil industry somehow. However, people not related to BP could have been found.
BP is running this disaster from a business point of view. It should be run from a scientific and ecological point of view. Research should have been started immediately.
SHOULD HAVE...........the point when real action should have been taken that might have made a huge difference is long gone. If they don't act now after all the obvious shite BP has done, the effects will be magnified every day.
I can't bear to watch this unfold. The effects of it will be felt for decades.
