School Fears Students Attending Texas Conference Could be Deported
OVERLAND PARK, KAN - Attending college is perfectly legal for many undocumented students in the state of Kansas. But when a group of Latino students at Johnson County Community College tried to attend a conference in Texas, the school balked, saying that it was for the student's safety, fearing that they might be picked up by authorities and deported.

The student group, LUNA, or Latinos United Now and Forever, received funding from the student senate at JCCC to attend the La Raza conference in San Antonio later this summer. But two members of the seven-person group are undocumented, and one of them, Will Suarez, says that the school is discriminating against his group.

"We're a family, either all of us go or none of us go," said Suarez, a sophomore and president of school's LUNA chapter. Suarez came to Johnson County from Peru at age 11. He says that nobody in the group can afford the San Antonio conference without funding from the student senate.

"They pay the student fees as well, they deserve every right to attend the conference just like any other student would," said Suarez.

1. I have to tell you, I agree with the school here
The risk is just not worth it.

And frankly, I would not try to spoil it for the rest of the students.

Reality check here.

2. An organization I belong to...
has already pulled out of our Tucson conference in 2011. We have many Mexican members who spend a ton to travel to the states and many others who are in the US legally, who would have to carry papers.
Bullshit. So, our huge conference flipped AZ the bird.

4. Since when do schools pay for students to attend conferences?
I didn't realize that is how it works.

11. San Antonio is not a "port of entry"
so they wouldn't have to declare citizenship to get on the plane (like we do here :grr: ). The only reason their status would get checkd is if they get arrested.

12. I did think of that
But I can understand the school feeling responsible for the welfare of these kids.
