Arkansas: Halter catching up to Blanche Lincoln! Please let it happen!
Edited on Tue May-18-10 09:56 PM by sabrina 1
Lincoln was way ahead in the beginning. But now it's:

Lincoln 43.6%
Halter 42.1%

Sorry, forgot the link:

1. Thanks for the post
Halter is the more progressive candidate--and he has a better chance of winning the general

3. I was watching it earlier and Lincoln was way ahead so I thought
she was going to pull it off. That was very early on though. But now it's almost even. This is an exciting race.

Do you really think Halter has a better chance in the general election? I would love to see Lincoln gone as she may as well be a Repub. ~

Still almost even! And Morrison is doing well also. That means Blanche is not too popular anymore.

7. Gee, Boozman below 50%
Does that mean he could face a run-off?

19. Even if Boozman loses the primary
the Republican will very likely win the general. This is the 3rd District, after all, which hasn't had a Democratic congressman since Representative Trimble left office in 1967.

24. ?? Isn't this the Senate race ??
What is 3rd District? Congressional District? How would that relate to a Senate race? Something I don't know about Arkansas (of which I readily admit there is a lot)?

26. There is also a Congressional primary, 3rd district
Actually, Boozman doesn't even seem to have been a candidate this time (I didn't know for sure, since I'm an expat and don't vote in the Republican primaries). But checking the VoteSmart website, his name doesn't appear in a very crowded field of Republican candidates.

30. That's what I get for not following the Arkansas Republican primaries
I get an education-- LOL! So Boozman is running for Senate? He'll undoubtedly carry NW Arkansas, but I wouldn't expect him to have much of a chance in the rest of the state.

No wonder the Republican 3rd District Congressional primary was so crowded.

31. No problem, I had not heard of him before tonight either ~
Good to hear you think he might have some problems ~ especially if the Dem turnout is big. Hopefully the winner will not be Blanche Lincoln though.

32. Boozman is from Northwest Arkansas
Rogers, to be exact, and that area is solidly Republican (Benton County, where Rogers is located, voted against Clinton for President twice, and voted for the Shrub twice, and went for McCain as well). Since Boozman is currently the 3rd District representative, his name is known in that part of the state. But the rest of the state outside of the 3rd district (there are 4 districts in all) generally favors the Democrat. The state has elected a Republican to the Senate only 1 time in more than 100 years (a guy from NW Arkansas, by the way), but he was only a one-termer, who was unseated, ironically, by Blanche Lincoln. Arkansas is a state where Presidential politics are generally Republican, but politics below that level are usually Democratic. So unless things get really messed up for the Democrats, I would expect the Democratic nominee to win in November.

35. I should make a correction
Edited on Wed May-19-10 09:08 AM by Art_from_Ark
Upon further consideration, I think that Blanche Lincoln actually replaced Dale Bumpers, a fellow Democrat, who retired after a 24-year career in the Senate. It was Mark Pryor who defeated Tim Hutchinson, Arkansas' only Republican Senator of the 20th century, in 2002. Hutchinson had won Pryor's father's Senate seat 6 years before that, after Pryor Sr. had retired after an 18-year career in the Senate. Hutchinson had played an unfavorable role in the Bill Clinton impeachment nonsense, and he was rewarded with a boot in the pants in the next election.

I remember Hutchinson and vaguely remember his role in the Clinton debacle. Don't know why, but I thought he was a Republican ... thanks again for the info ~ :-)

38. Yes, Tim Hutchinson was/is a Republican
He was one of the people involved in dragging fellow Arkansan Bill Clinton through the mud. That won him some brownie points in the northwest/north-central part of the state, which has a large population of (mainly Republican) newcomers, but people in the rest of the state, who are mainly native Arkansans, were really ticked off at Hutchinson's antics because he was dragging down "our guy in the White House". Interestingly, Hutchinson's brother, Asa, was nominated by bu$h to head the Border and Transportation Security Directorate. I'm wondering if this might have been some sort of reward for his brother's role in helping to cripple Clinton, and by extension, Al Gore.

39. Okay, good, I thought I was remembering wrong.
I think he lost his seat, along with four or five other Repubs after the Impeachment debacle, one of them was my Rep. on Long Island, Forbes.

As for Asa being rewarded by Bush for his brother's role, it's hard to say. The Bushes and Clinton seem to get along very well, and airc, Pappy Bush did say at the time that he wasn't very enthusiastic about the whole 'get Clinton' campaign.

27. It is the Senate race. I don't understand the comment either.
The Republican Boozman won his primary with 52% of the vote. But check out the numbers.

http://www.politico.com/2010/maps/#/Senate/2010/AR

Boozman approx 73,000 votes

Lincoln 144,000 (approx).

Halter 137,600 votes (approx)

Even the third Dem. candidate got approx. 42,000 votes to Boozman's 73,000.

If Halter wins the runoff which I think he can, and the turnout is anything like it was tonight, the Republican doesn't have a chance.

8. Once again, Dem voters greatly outnumber Republican tonight
I don't think outside factors (such as a "boring" Republican race) can explain away these numbers...the Dem voters outnumber Repugs by a ratio of 7-to-3!

23. Exactly! I hope they realize now, after tonight and
and Mass that the 'left' decided these primaries and will decide the election in Nov.

Blanche is speaking now and she seems a little stunned.

The polls had her winning fairly easily, many by double digits!

This was a good night for the liberal wing of the party! :bounce:
