Identity of Souder staffer involved in affair shocks Kosciusko County town

SYRACUSE — Congressman Mark Souder announced his resignation from office Tuesday after admitting he had an affair with a member of his staff. CBS News has identified that staffer as Tracy Jackson, who worked on a part time basis in one of Souder's Indiana offices. News of her involvement sent shock-waves through her hometown of Syracuse.

The eight-term conservative Republican and champion of traditional family values admitted to having an affair during a press conference Tuesday morning in Fort Wayne. Souder told reporters he had been involved in a mutual relationship with a part-time staffer.

Souder didn't identify the staffer, but high level sources in Souder's Washington, D.C. office tell CBS News that staffer is Jackson.


The Washington Post reported the affair came to light when anonymous tipsters began calling aides in Souder's office, as well as opponents in the primary. Tuesday, Souder said his decision to step down is the best decision for his family, the people of his district, and the country.

"Shock" does indeed seem to be an overstatement. "Surprise" or "caught off guard" I can see, but "shocked"? Not if you're over eight years old.
