Second-grader asks Michelle Obama if the President will deport her mother.
Today, while President Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon spoke about the need for immigration reform at a press conference in the Rose Garden, First Lady Michelle Obama and Mexico’s First Lady Margarita Zavala visited the New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD to speak with second graders. During Mrs. Obama’s visit, one of the students brought up the immigration issue. ABC News’ Karen Travers reports:

The student shyly raised her hand and said, “My mom … she says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers.”

Mrs. Obama replied: “Yeah, well that’s something that we have to work on, right? To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right? That’s exactly right.”

The girl then said quietly, “But my mom doesn’t have any …” and trailed off.

Mrs. Obama replied: “Well, we have to work on that. We have to fix that, and everybody’s got to work together in Congress to make sure that happens. That’s right.”

5. ....
I have as much compassion for this kid as I would for one that said "my Mom makes meth in the kitchen". I weep for the children of criminals.

9. Because cooking meth is exactly the same thing as crossing the border without papers
Wow. Just wow.

11. How many times has it been posted that immigration law
isn't criminal law? 10? 50? 100?

And why wouldn't you have empathy for a family dealing with addiction?

Teh stupid it makes me weep.

8. Washington Post: "The angriest and most hateful comments from our readers
come on articles about illegal immigration, and the television clip of that second-grade girl telling Michelle Obama that her mother doesn't have papers has brought out the mob again."

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dot.comments/2010/05/immigration_reform_and_the_second_grader.html?wprss=dot.comments

"There are certainly sympathetic remarks about the child's concerns and her mother's plight, but the majority of the 260 comments at this writing are rants against immigrants in general, charges that the student's comments were carefully staged and criticism of the Obama administration's attempts to find a federal legislative solution on a subject fraught with peril for many members of Congress.

As Michael D. Shear and Michael Birnbaum write, "On the day of a carefully choreographed state dinner with the Mexican president, it was another reminder of outside factors intruding on the Obama administration's careful and paced pursuit of a bipartisan agreement on immigration reform.""

12. How do you come to a bipartisan agreement when the other side is full of racists?
Good grief, President Obama. Give up this bipartisan pipe dream. It ain't gonna happen. Not on health care and not on immigration either.
