Down Memory Lane with Salazar..
Edited on Thu May-20-10 12:38 PM by lostnfound
Who was right about him? Where do his values lie??

December 2008:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x3646282 As Colorado's Attorney General, Salazar actively opposed endangered species listing of the black-tailed prairie dog, which, despite its population declines, is still listed as a "pest" by Colorado.

December 2008:

Environmental advocates offered mixed reviews of Mr. Salazar, 53, a first-term Democratic senator who served as head of Colorado’s natural resources department and as the state’s attorney general. Mr. Salazar was not the first choice of environmentalists, who openly pushed the appointment of Representative Raul Grijalva, Democrat of Arizona, who has a strong record as a conservationist.
...
Mr. Popovich (spokesman for the National Mining Association) noted approvingly that Mr. Salazar had tried to engineer a deal in the Senate allowing mining companies and others to reclaim abandoned mines without fear of lawsuits. (The legislation is pending.) He has also supported robust research on technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coal-burning power plants, something the coal industry favors.
…..
Marc Smith, executive director of the Independent Petroleum Association of Mountain States, said in a statement that Mr. Salazar understood that energy security can be achieved only by making use of all domestic energy sources, including those found on and under public lands.
……….."He is a right-of-center Democrat who often favors industry and big agriculture in battles over global warming, fuel efficiency and endangered species," said Kieran Suckling, executive director of Center for Biological Diversity, which tracks endangered species and habitat issues. "He is very unlikely to bring significant change to the scandal-plagued Department of Interior. It's a very disappointing choice for a presidency which promised visionary change."

2. Let's hope he gets edged out soon
Now is the (only) chance for change, until the disaster gets put on page 3.

3. Like him or not, the changes at MMS are a vast improvement:
(yesterday's news)

The Secretarial Order I have signed today will establish the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, and the Office of Natural Resources Revenue as follows:

· Bureau of Ocean Energy Management: A new bureau under the supervision of the Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management that will be responsible for the sustainable development of the Outer Continental Shelf’s conventional and renewable energy resources, including resource evaluation, planning, and other activities related to leasing.

· Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement: A new bureau under the supervision of the Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management that will be responsible for ensuring comprehensive oversight, safety, and environmental protection in all offshore energy activities.

· Office of Natural Resources Revenue: A new office under the supervision of the Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management, and Budget, that will be responsible for the royalty and revenue management function including the collection and distribution of revenue, auditing and compliance, and asset management.

4. I was right about him in 2008. Here's what I wrote in December of 2008 about Salazar
"Obama's Secretary of Interior? Ken Salazar, a man in the pocket of the mining industry and the agricorps and who was a cheerleader for the corrupt Gayle Norton at Interior." -- http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=4699429

Salazar was one of Obama's more troubling early picks before he was inaugurated.

I am still baffled as to why he cluttered his Cabinet with a man so mired with conflict of interests for such an important post.

6. I haven't liked Salazar since he usurped the popular candidate in the Senate race in '04.
Progressive candidate Mike Miles won the caucus by 51% but the Salazar machine outspent him and ultimately won the Senate seat. Inbred state political systems have given up this clusterfuck in the Gulf.
