Lookin’ Ugly at the Deepwater Horizon Live Cam? (Major new ugly event happening???)
If anyone has any inside knowledge as to whether this is significant, please post here. From the Naked Capitalism blog:

http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2010/05/lookin-ugly-at-the-deepwater-horizon-live-cam.html

This is just a snippet (and this message is per the request of Lambert Strether, who has a post of his own up and trying to get further information from other Deepwater Horizon live cam bloggers or watchers):

Major changes happening at BP Disaster site:

http://monkeyfister.blogspot.com/2010/05

There have been several major eruptions of the seabed under riser pipe. I’ve been watching and live-blogging all day. Some screengrabs. Whatever happened is very serious, and I am sure not good news for BP or even Republicans. Seabed dropped several feet, Spillcam covered in oil, Spew increased. New leaking hole in seabed. Possible casing failure.

NOTE Seabed dropped several feet???? –lambert

Thu updates from monkeyfister (see comments) are not encouraging:

Right now, as I type at 5:45pm CDT, there is ANOTHER eruption event happening.

–mf…

Current Eruption is WAAAAY Worse than Earlier Ones…

By Monkeyfister on Sun, 05/23/2010 – 7:25pm
I think this may be a “Main Event” situation. When the water clears, if it looks like the riser flow is less… it means the BOP (which BP has been keeping the ROVs away from all day long) has probably totally blown out.

Bad. Bad. Bad deal.

2. This is a nightmare
Live cam: http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_internet/globalbp/globalbp_uk_english/homepage/STAGING/local_assets/bp_homepage/html/rov_stream.html

This thing is spewing like mad - and this is the smaller riser leak, not the BOP leak.

I wish they would pan.

4. The only thing I've heard reported is something about the amount
of oil they've been able to capture at the site has decreased. Of course, it's probably all a load of BS. We're not getting the truth about anything.

8. That the casing for the blown pipe would deteriorate
and basically fall into itself....widening the hole---spilling more oil.

Is that the force of the spill eroding the level, or what? I don't understand. Thx.

If you go here and go to the comments section you can follow the developments and history.

They are implying now that the current video is a loop and not real-time.

35. I have been watcing the live cam for about 20 minutes.
It may indeed be a loop tape. It goes along, then a quick jerky flicker, and parts of the small white pipe in the lower right hand corner has what appears to be a repeated pattern of being obscured, then uncovered, in the identical way, over and over.

17. Seafloor dropping? Perhaps not as much pressure holding the seafloor up
If the pressure below the seafloor is dropping, it may present an opportunity to force material back down the hole and stop up the leak.

This may not be 'bad' news.

18. Uh, if the sea floor is dropping....
wouldn't that maintain if not increase the pressure due to the added weight of the sea floor? I've also read the dropping of the sea floor could cause a tidal wave. I've heard nothing BUT bad news for the past month. At this point, even if they completely stop the spill, we're dealing with a dead Gulf for decades to come. Please tell me where to find "good" news in that. Thanks.

24. This "leak" is scaring the piss out of me
Just how much oil and gas is in that pocket beneath the Gulf's floor?!?

I can't help wondering what will happen if the "powers" that be really know or discover that the gusher cannot be stopped.

And what happpens if the "Gulf of Crude" gets hit with hurricane(s) this season, as well as the next, and the next... How far inland could the crude reach if it is picked up by wind and storm surge water?

The southeastern/western/mideastern US could take on a "sheen" in the sunlight within a few years??

Isn't this crude oil, cancer causing with prolonged exposure to it, not to mention sickening by unavoidably breathing in its fumes?

Shiny, happy people...

29. Well, when a massive amount of oil that had been under the seabed is ejected, it leaves a cavity
And that cavity is under tremendous pressure. If that cavity isn't filled from below, it will be crushed by the ocean above it and all hell could break loose.

31. That's been my fear since the beginning.
It happens now and then on dry land without tons of water pressure. Check google earth. The well is on the edge of a trench, so to speak. It gets deep out there quick. More tons of pressure and less rock to support it. Shit.

42. I have a good imagination.
But it won't wrap around "the worst case scenario" if this deposit is as large, and as high pressure, as some suggest. Spewing through 5000 feet of water and up into the air? "Shit" is about as far as my prognostication skills go.

38. Last night I saw events in the spill cam that maybe someone could help interpret.
I was watching the pipe one minute, then a few minutes later, the lens was nothing but an explosion of brown water and chunks floating at the lens. This lasted for about a half-hour, then the camera moved (intentionally) and rotated left to right. There was blackness, brownness, and some moments when lights were shining through the blackness or brownness. Then the image was much clearer and robotic arms were working on the pipe, but it was hard to see what they were doing exactly. Then the screen went back to brown mess.

Now it looks like nothing has changed
