Nine-time deportee arrested for rape near Seattle
Edited on Mon May-24-10 01:17 PM by alp227
Jonathan Turley posted a story (source: KING-TV) about Jose Lopez Madrigal, an illegal immigrant from Mexico who's been deported from the US 9 times and is now in jail for allegedly taking a woman to a dumpster and raping her. Madrigal used nearly 30 aliases. His past criminal record includes:
- 1989: Armed robbery, deported (California)
- 1999: Drug dealing, deported three times (California)
- 2000: Ditto
- 2002: 3rd degree sexual assault, deported (Colorado)
- 2003: Deported three times

So simply deporting every illegal immigrant won't prevent re-entry unless the US beefs up border security.

(on edit) And yes, even though you may deplore states' supposed spending more on prisons than on schools, people like Madrigal are why you should be THANKFUL that prisons exist. Had he served for a long time maybe he could be less of a threat to public safety.

1. Why the hell was he deported before he'd finished a lengthy sentence?
This is a public health and safety issue, keeping this kind of scum off the streets.

Since Mexico seems unmotivated to keep him off the streets, maybe it's our job.

8. It is unbelievable that the federal response to crimes committed by
'illegal aliens' is to simply deport them. That is NOT a punishment, it's just a free bus ride home. If he'd served ten years on the armed robbery in '89, none of the subsequent crimes in the 90s would have been committed.

And the idiot letters after the article - THEIR solution is better border enforcement. IOW, send him back out of the country again. This is not an 'illegal immigrant' issue, it is about letting people go who commit crimes because they happened to be born on the other side of the border.

If an American commits a crime in Mexico, they lock him up for years, THEN send him home. Why are we incapable of doing the same?

2. Agreed. The federal government should strengthen border security.
And I think I'm in the minority here, but I can understand border states trying to do something in the absence of the federal government taking effective action.

Our border has never been as closed as it is now and ICE has never been more active, and their "secure communities" program is still ramping up.

This guy in the OP is obviously a criminal problem, not an immigration problem.

23. Agreed. Thos who think you can "secure the border" don't understand the challenges
The current costs of trying to "secure our border" is already staggering, and still people find a way to get through.

24. Since violent criminals are very much in the minority in any population,
wouldn't we be further ahead to mind that they get brought to justice instead of trying to "secure the border" against mostly harmless people?

I think so. We'd get more bang for our buck. But then, the Republicans would have nothing to run on.

25. It's simply capitalizing on ignorance
Which is something the Republicans have been developing into a fine art for decades. The estimates for building a border fence were as high as building the Apollo Moon Program in today's dollars, and still you do not get complete success. If we try to secure the border, at the border, we have already failed. The answer is comprehensive immigration reform and greater focus on catching violent criminals as you say.

I heard an AWW (Angry White Woman) the other day criticizing Obama for failing to secure the border and allowing "terrorists" (actually what the CBP describes as "Other Than Mexicans"). The hysteria is being fueled by the wingnut media who is alleging Al Queda is teaming up with the Mexican cartels to invade the US. It's pretty funny until you realize some people actually believe this shit.

5. Yes, we need a process that makes it easy for people to come into the country to work
Edited on Mon May-24-10 01:01 PM by slackmaster
They would be able to enter the country the same way a US citizen returning home from Mexico would. At that point, they would be screened to make sure they aren't a fugitive from justice, a convicted felon, or a carrier of tuberculosis, hepatitis, etc.

Make entry for work, education, or recreation simple, and enforce the crap out of the border. Anyone who bypasses the system could be assumed to be hiding something.

we will never solve the problem as long as jobs are available.

9. Yes, I agree completely
Enforcement can't be handled just at the border.

Employers need an EASY to verify that someone is qualified to work in this country, and those who hire people who are not qualified should be penalized severely.

Doctors, lawyers, teachers, IT workers -ESPECIALLY IT WORKERS!, engineers, you name it. I assume you support that as well unless, of course, you are some kind of racist xenophobe.

13. Why deported? Shouldn't he have been extradited to the Mexican authorities?
And if he kept coming back and committing crime, why not just stick him in our prisons if Mexican prisons won't do the job?

It's Turley. The same guy who thinks Sotomayor is stupid and when reaching back into the recesses of his brain for another judge to compare her to (another dumb judge) comes back with Thurgood Marshall.

21. Focusing on Turley, an intermediary, is a cheap way to dismiss the problem
Try ignoring the fact that Turley posted it, and go to the original source.

20. He's a stark illustration of a problem with our immigration system
Edited on Mon May-24-10 02:42 PM by slackmaster
Because there is no easy path for people to come here simply to work, and because we don't have an effective way to stop employers from hiring illegal immigrants, the large number of people who bypass the legal immigration system make it impossible to stop illegal immigration.

With all those people entering the country in an uncontrolled manner, all kinds of bad apples are bound to get in.
