U.S. police chiefs say Arizona immigration law will increase crime

By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, May 27, 2010

Arizona's new crackdown on illegal immigration will increase crime in U.S. cities, not reduce it, by driving a wedge between police and immigrant communities, police chiefs from several of the state's and the nation's largest cities said Wednesday.

Arizona's law will intimidate crime victims and witnesses who are illegal immigrants and divert police from investigating more serious crimes, chiefs from Los Angeles, Houston and Philadelphia said before meeting Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to discuss the measure. Counterparts from Phoenix, Tucson, San Jose and Montgomery County, among others, joined them.

"This is not a law that increases public safety. This is a bill that makes it much harder for us to do our jobs," Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said. "Crime will go up if this becomes law in Arizona or in any other state."

1. Bah. They're only big city police chiefs. What do they know?
I'd rather listen to some rabid right-wing politician.

Now, how do you make that sarcasm thingie?

2. palin
hello all! brand new member tonight. I'm not sure I am doing this correctly...very old and not up on these computers. my 28 year old grandson is a, I'm sorry to say, a Sarah Palin fan. (my first vote was for Harry T. and it has been Dem. since and always will be until the big man decides I need to check out!). we have had are arguments the last year and he has said..."pappy, you need to go to the Democratic Underground", they think like you do! okay, he showed me this thing a few days ago and how to get here and I looked it over and read the comments here and decided that, yes, you DO all think like I do. I'm not much of a talker, more of a listener but in the last few days reading your thoughts here I feel like I'm where this old boy can still learn a few things. and if my grandson wants to chase after this Palin person well, he will learn the errors of his ways!! anyway, hello all again!
