What a mess.

edit: as Coustaeu Jr. said, this is a 3D spill that effects the whole water column.

1. The Gulf isn't 23 miles deep -- the ocean is only about 5-6 miles deep at most

5. Sub surface can mean horizontal as well as vertical.
So 23 miles *long* is a good description.

26. Uhm 'Long' is the word.
Length is a horizontal measurement generally speaking as in Length x Width X Height. Height being the measurement you are referring to.

3. Please cite a legitimate link to this "news". The Gulf isn't even close to 23 miles deep.
I'm not even sure the Marianas Trench is that deep.

FAIL.

9. It stretches across the ocean almost 23 feet.

NEW ORLEANS — Marine scientists have discovered a massive new plume of what they believe to be oil deep beneath the Gulf of Mexico, stretching 22 miles from the leaking wellhead northeast toward Mobile Bay, Alabama.

14. Yes, approx. thirty seconds after I saw the typo
What I meant to write was that it was deep and 23 miles long. It was nearly a direct quote.
Thanks.

when you shake it.
